Two soldiers monitored the tense surgery and facilitated the disposal of the live grenade out of fear it could 'detonate at any moment'

Military surgeons in Ukraine have successfully removed a grenade lodged inside a 29-year-old soldier’s chest.

Major-General Andriy Verba, an experienced surgeon from Vinnytsia, extracted the explosive from the soldier’s upper chest, the country’s armed forces said.

Two soldiers monitored the tense surgery and facilitated the disposal of the grenade, fearing it could “detonate at any moment,” according to Ukraine’s defence ministry.

The military released an X-ray of a grenade located within a person’s torso and a photo of Verba holding a bloodied grenade after surgery.
The device, a VOG grenade, is a four-centimetre-long piece of ammunition designed to be fired from a grenade launcher and explode above ground.

Verba, who is described as “one of the most experienced surgeons” of Ukraine’s military, performed the surgery without electrocoagulation, a common form of cauterization that applies heat from an electric current to stop bleeding and remove damaged tissue during surgery.

The soldier was reportedly wounded during an assault in the eastern Ukrainian town of Bakhmut.

He has since been sent to rehabilitation and is recovering, Anton Gerashchenko, Ukraine’s internal affairs ministerial adviser wrote on Telegram.

“There have never been such operations in the practice of our doctors. Similar was during the war in Afghanistan. About the current patient, I can say that he was born in 1994, now he is sent for rehabilitation, his condition is stable. I think this case will go down in medical textbooks,” he said.
