David Cameron last night called on the Archbishop of Canterbury to lead a return to the ‘moral code’ of the Bible.

In a highly personal speech about faith, the Prime Minister accused Dr Rowan Williams of failing to speak ‘to the whole nation’ when he criticised Government austerity policies and expressed sympathy with the summer rioters.

Mr Cameron declared Britain ‘a Christian country’ and said politicians and churchmen should not be afraid to say so.

He warned that a failure to ‘stand up and defend’ the values and morals taught by the Bible helped spark the riots and fuelled terrorism.

At Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford, where Dr Williams used to teach, Mr Cameron said the time has come for public figures to teach ‘right from wrong’, and questioned whether the Church of England has done enough to defend those values in the face of the ‘moral neutrality’ that pervades modern life.

And taking aim at the Archbishop, Mr Cameron tackled head-on his public criticisms of the Government over the last 12 months.

The speech was a bold Christmas gamble by Mr Cameron. In making a speech about religion, he did something that Tony Blair always longed to do but was talked out of by spin doctor Alastair Campbell, who flatly told him: ‘We don’t do God.’

The clash between the Government and Church is at its most acute since former Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Robert Runcie clashed with Margaret Thatcher’s government in the 1980s.
The Prime Minister appeared emboldened by his opinion poll bounce since his decision to wield the veto during the Eurozone crisis summit in Brussels last week.

Admitting that he had ‘entered the lion’s den’ by addressing an audience of churchmen, Mr Cameron said: ‘I certainly don’t object to the Archbishop of Canterbury expressing his views on politics.

Well, he's got that part right. Too bad it's usually the other way around. And even when they do "teach" the right way, they usually don't lead by example.

I like this Cameron guy he won't take any shit from the Euro cockroaches and he tells it like it is. Indeed very principled leadership.

That is about the dummest thing I have heard in a long time. Now, in 2030 or thereabout, when the majority of UK people are muslims, the UK will be declared a muslim country.

Or, has the clown considered the possibility of a handful of cities in the UK being declared muslim cities?

So putting it another way are you saying that the U.K. should say "screw the E.U and its supranational courts" and just deport Muslim extremists
Are you on drugs? How do you get from my post to that? Read the post, and sober up.

England has never lived by the moral code of the Bible. Instead it's history is built on slavery, colonialism, a rigid class system, and the industrial revolution. For a nation that carried the white man's burden for so long it is ironic that it sees itself as being overwhelmed by alien values. For all the greatness that is and was England its past is hardly one of christian virtue.

What? So.. the Queen-Monarchy doesn't live by the moral code of the Bible? Where does this all make sense? U.K is pure Christianity and full of churches just like here in Canada. Take a drive around Toronto and look at all of the Anglican Churches. Before you take your journey throw away your 420.

Are you intending to adopt Winnie the Pooh's statement "I am a bear of very little brain and long words bother me." Your knowledge of early English History is I regret to say appalling!

Actually England was converted to Christianity by a missionary who risked his life by preaching to the heathen Anglo-Saxons and convinced them to accept Christianity as their choice. No force at all.

This is the problem with having a national religion... you can easily confuse tradition with fact....

It has nothing to with what religion(s) they have now, or how they came about their religion , as it is right now in English law Christianity, or to be more Precise the Church of England is the state religion with the Ruling monarch as Head of that relgion ( not verbatim) So the UK is, indeed, a christian country.

Not saying I agree with the rest of the things he said , but he is correct on that point.
