smiley's language aside, I saw the same show and it was fascinating. They discussed genetic mutations that render the bearer immune from plague-like diseases. A descendant of a family which had lived in the same small village in Yorkshire had the gene and they speculated this is why his forebears survived the bubonic plage when 90% of the village was wiped out.

Then they tracked the same gene to a gay guy in NYC who had never tested positive for AIDS.
