Toronto police are hunting for two young men who pulled off a daring daytime bank robbery Sunday that left two people shot and wounded in Toronto’s west end.

The two armed men — one with a semi-automatic handgun, the other brandishing a rifle — stormed into the TD Canada Trust shortly after noon at the corner of St. Clair Ave. W. and Mould Ave., near Runnymede Rd.

“They took over the bank,” said Micheal Earl, staff inspector of the Toronto Police hold-up squad. “They bolted the counters, removing money.”

A customer then confronted the robber with the handgun, challenging his order to get on the ground. The robber opened fire at the customer and “that round struck a 22-year-old female employee” of the bank, wounding her on the leg, Earl said.

The robbers then ran out of the bank, and the customer who confronted the thieves earlier “chased the suspects into the parking lot,” Earl said. The customer struggled with one of the robbers, who fired his handgun, striking the customer in the stomach.

He then hopped into a stolen green four-door Honda Civic and sped off. Earl gave the licence plate as AKAC 786.

“These people are very armed and very dangerous,” said Earl, who says anyone who sees them should not approach them.

The customer who was shot in the stomach is in serious condition in hospital undergoing surgery.

Ear; described the men as between the ages of 20 and 25, both black and they entered the bank wearing hoodies.

“Very rarely do we have anybody shot at a bank robbery,” Earl said, adding that the last time he recalls a shooting was at a Peel Region bank in 1999.

A customer at St. Clair Ave., Jose Santos, 51, was in the bank manager’s office with his son and wife when the robbers stormed in, ordering everybody to the ground.

“I was very scared, because he was waving the gun at everybody,” Santos told reporters after being questioned by police.

Rick, a 45-year-old customer who would not give his last name, was waiting to deposit cheques at the bank when the robbers came in.

“One guy decided to stand up to them,” Rick said, referring to the customer standing next to him. “They guys were pointing the gun right at him. They told him to get down and he said he wouldn’t.

“They then started wrestling, and a shot went off,” Rick said.

Rick said the customer then chased the robbers as they left the bank with a bag full of money. When a customer got shot in the stomach, Rick says he took off his shirt and used it to apply pressure on the customer’s wound.

“He’s just one of those guys that wasn’t going to take s—t from anybody. It’s unbelievable,” Rick said.

Rick said the robbers opened the bag of money before getting in the getaway car. He then saw red dye explode out of the bag, covering the bills in red powder. The robbers sped off with an unknown amount of money, Staff Insp. Earl said

So they shoot two people doing a hold up, and then their money gets tainted by a dye pack explosion? Either very desperate, or very stupid, or both. Armed robbery, attempted murder, stealing a car...and they have nothing to show for it but useless red dye stained money.

Ok, I'll start. Were these two "gentlemen" known to police and are out on bail?
Wait for the looney left liberals to excuse their behaviour.

what a dumb f*ck that customer was who got shot. Banks make insane amounts of money, why does he care if it gets robbed? Then he was stupid enough to chase them into the parking lot after someone was shot inside, and tried to wrestle with them? Only way I`m ever stepping in front of a gun is if a family member is being kidnapped and they have already shot someone.

Exactly! As a result of this idiot trying to be a super hero the girl got shot, and as a result he got shot as well.

Why are people so stupid?

Rick said of the customer then chased the robbers as they left the bank:

“He’s just one of those guys that wasn’t going to take shit from anybody."

I would agree that it is unwise to struggle with armed men who are intent on robbing a bank.

I was in a drug store a few weeks ago and a guy grabbed the money out of the open till and ran out the door with a fistful of it. Another male cashier ran after him and gave chase. He returned out of breath and announced to the manager he almost tackled the guy and if so would have "messed him up 'cause I could have taken him". Manager said "It isn't in your job description to chase and beat up people who rob us - thank you for your efforts, but remember, he could have had a knife and stabbed you when you tackled him - is $80 from the till worth you risking your life over?"

Normally you are fired for chasing after thieves. Because of policy and all that. It's not worth risking your life over, what? Your manager sees that you gave up the money, so what? A job is replaceable, a life isn't.
