This is just stupid! The biggest drinking night of the year other than Superbowl and the TTC won't let people on for free.

The damn thing will be running anyways why not let people get home safe. The TTC says they will lose a million dollars. Thats just crap when public safety is the issue. It won't cost one extra penny to run that system on New Years eve if you open the doors. It's already running. It's not like extra cars are being put on for free.

Make it a honour system, if you can pay do it. If you can't or are wasted climb on and go home and sleep.

Just a dumb stupid move.

BTW...I know it hasn't been free since the 1970's and thats still makes it dumb!

We have Police all over the city looking for drunk drivers yet we won't let partyers ride home safe. And it's not the partyers safety I worry about. It's the poor bastard who visited his inlaws and gets hit by a drunk driver on the way home. Thats the person we're protecting.

arrg!

It's been good to know ya
I just hope then that nobody in Toronto decides to drive home on thier own drunk and hope that they do not cause any accidents.

on the other hand, if you can afford to have 2 or 3 or more drinks, a few bucks on a safe ride home shouldn't be the deterent either.

That would mean the person is thinking not drinking.

IN a perfect world you're right.

Based on that analogy, which I agree with, I'm not sure that free vs paid fare would have that much impact either.... unfortunate but true IMO

That's strange, I remember in the late 90's that the TTC was free, because I don't remember paying, but I guess I'm remembering wrong.

It may not cost an extra penny, but it's still a cost.

No one is stopping them from riding the TTC, paying a $2.75 fare is cheaper than a cab fare.

But to the above 3 posters, yes, it would be nice for it to be free (or at least a disounted fare) on NY, but it is still up to drinker to be responsible, cab rides aren't free either and yet no one complains about that. But are now to blame the TTC for drunk driving?

Those who don't believe that the majority of bar patrons who leave bars legally drunk and drive away are simply naive regardless if it's New Years eve or not.

Well I understand and even agree the TTC should be free on New Years eve, the reality is that the TTC is losing a night's revenue. Why should the TTC have to foot that cost? Nothing is free...

This is a simple issue - let me lay it out in clear terms:

Drinking and driving is a choice - there is no other way to see it
Round trip TTC is $5.00 - less than the cost of a beer. Have one less beer!
If you are a TTC snob, put aside an extra $40 for a cab (some will be more, a lot will be less)
If you choose to drink and drive, you are a F**KING IDIOT and you deserve what you get. I only hope you kill yourself and hurt nobody else

Again, I repeat - drinking and driving IS A CHOICE. There is no other rational or irrational way to look at it. When you left home, you were likely sober. If you do not trust yourself, leave the car at home.

You will not want to wake up hung over and realize the rest of your life is ruined!

and no, in case anyone is wondering, my life has never been impacted by a drunk driver or drunk driving. I am just amazed at the total stupidy and disregard people have for others when they say "I'm OK to drive, I've only had a few". You are truly an idiot if you think that!

What he said, in SPADES....

here's another option; DON'T drink or have a designated driver....it is pretty fucking simple actually. Where is it written in our law books that says it is mandatory to drink on New Year's Eve?

SOrry, but if someone could point out that law in the criminal code I will turn myself in to the nearest police station because I haven't drank in about 10 yrs.....

I guess it's the choice of the TTC to not be free but what is up with not extending the hours of operation for party goers? I have lived in several major cities all over North America and Toronto is the only one who makes you pay and keeps the same regular schedule. Just goes to show that the people responsible for public safety for the Toronto area don't give a damn.

ok, you're missing the point here, why SHOULD the TTC be free anytime? Like I said, it ain't like there's a law that says you have to drink.....

It used to be in the past that certain companies would pick up the tab but hey, those days are gone I guess....

What kills me is that everyone who is bitching about it NOT being free at no time owns up to the fact that THEY DON'T HAVE TO DRINK.....

maybe the bitching people are one of those tax payers that pay their taxes to have the government help with keeping the TTC alive yah think?

One night to a tax payer already paying for something they may never use would be a nice gesture for the good and safety of all. Link just an example of the generosity of the tax payer, it should just be given in return

Well of course people dont have to drink Tboy ,but lets get real here ,most that enjoy alcohol do get drunk that night ......I thought thats why the rides come into play ....since its known as the worst night of drunk drivers then any other time of the year !!!!!!!!

oh and by the way ....most car insurances will reimburse your cab ride new years eve ....if you get a receipt ..but if your drunk you will probably forget this lol
