all the Earthquakes and hurricanes
mothernature has been very nasty latley!
wasnt all this predicted for sometime in the year 2000?

In 1978, over 278,000 died in China, as a result of earthquakes. China was even more tight knit in '78 than it is in now. We hardly knew about this catastrophe. With the advent of the web and the proliferation of video cameras and camcorders (not to mention satellites taking pictures of every square kilometre of the earth knowadays), a disaster of such magnitude will get the airplay.
I think they have enough money at this point, its gonna be tough six months and a year from now. Some people are starting to turn this disaster off even during the last week.

Leggy Linda, the island of Sumatra Indonesia is surrounded by Volcanos below the ocean and Tectonic plates, so get earthquakes often, just not this scale. The Imax movie Rings of Fire has a lot of simulation and eruption footages. With Asian, property insurance is a luxury for biz and the rich. So will take a lifetime for many to rebuild.
With information age, we quickly find out global events without leaving our living room. It's not end of world. Unfortunately, natural disasters happens often around the world, hurrricanes, typhoons, mid-west flood, ice-storms, etc. Many websites track disasters and preventions. It's one reason we have a once elite DART (Disaster Assistance Response team), but such a shame with Gov. cut-backs, there are no planes to transport DART and their equipement. Now they realize DART is too late getting to Sri Lanka, so DART is just a gorified M.A.S.H. unit. Such a shame. If there were disaster on the west coast, it would take a week for DART to hire Russian planes to fly over Canadian soil to get the heavy equipment out.
BTW, some or most of 9/11 was preventable. Few high level U.S. fools had the intelligence (remember the first World Trade bomb attempt), their big ego were thinking, who would dare to mess with big mighty Uncle Sam...
