Trump says they did not give up much for it, lol. I bet he did, but its a small chip and a good confidence building measure for the much tougher conversations ahead.

Trump’s involvement in securing the release of Marc Fogel from a Russian prison appears to be mere political theater. Always eager for a high-profile moment, Trump seized the opportunity for a photo-op, portraying himself as the decisive leader who delivers results. His efforts to free Fogel catered directly to his MAGA base, reinforcing the image of a strong, America-first negotiator who prioritizes U.S. citizens abroad. Trump’s motivations seem tied to a bigger goal, securing an almost impossible third presidential term to shield himself from the consequences of his mounting legal troubles. With massive civil judgments looming and serious criminal charges threatening his future, every move he makes appears calculated to maintain his grip on power.

What was Jared Vogel doing in Russia?

Putin needs help from his boy toy, his regime is getting attacked from within. Two of his henchmen have gotten wacked so far. Putinesca blames Ukraine, it looks more like Prigozhin's militia has turned against him.

I'm making popcorn.

He probably traded Ukraine for the guy. What ever happened to "that war will be over, probably before I take office"?
They filed the project in the round 1.5 ft. tall metal file cabinet in the corner along with the " The Mexicans will pay for the wall " project.

Putin will go out of his way to help crown Trumputin the new King of the USA. Once Trump forces Zelensky to give up all the land Russia is occupying and also of course, all of Ukraine's minerals for the US Putin will end further invasions. Then Trump and Putin will snuggle privately in front of a fire and laugh loudly.

What the trade was will come out eventually, but it seems very important to his PR to claim he gave up very little.

They will release a yet unnamed Russian prisoner. This as structured clearly as a confidence building measure. With Putin giving Trump his photo op and allowing him to take the guy without the usual mutual exchange. Ultimatley this guy was just busted for medical marijuana so he was easy to risk. Putin is a pretty smart negotiator. There are some difficult converstations ahead and he needs Trump to be winning.

These things are often part PR, so I'm not even blaming Trump here, really.
Anyone believing Trump's categorization of it on its face is being silly, but that a prisoner exchange has some PR and kayfabe components is normal enough.

yes but normally they meet at a neutral airport and exchange prisoners with a 3rd party broker, Qatar or Saudi or Turks. The fact that this happened this way means that the Russian side wanted to meet with Witkopf to see if he was not a moron like Kellogg and Trump offered him as a potential alternative to head the negotiations. Also offering the guy with only verbal assuances is a confidence building measure to tee of the negotiations and give Trump a poltical win to offset the political losses he will have to take to end the war.

Trump just announced that Ukraine won't return to 2014 borders, likely Putin is offering him gifts to set up backing Russia's land gains as part of a settlement.

There is no win for Trump in Ukraine, and NATO is in no shape to fight a war with Russia. Biden called Putins bluff, it was not a bluff.
