Anyone else thumbs down on this?

It was a great series back in 1972, but why can't people let this go. Another series would never match the excitement and the drama of the original games. We see these kinds of tournaments every year in many levels of hockey, so why would this one be any more special? We have Russian junior teams here on an annual basis, the WJHC, the IIHF World Championships in the spring, the Olympics, Canada Cups, plus the fact that we see all these Russian players in the NHL on our tv every night. Not to mention all the 1972 reuinion games they have played. They also had that All-Star series back in the late 1980's - Rendezvous.

Hey, I was a very proud Canadian watching in 1972 and it was one of the most memorable sporting events I have witnessed. However, 'been there - done that, got the t-shirts, jerseys, dvd and all the other stuff'. Move on.

I agree with everything you said ... The only thing that makes it interesting ..
Four games on NHL size rinks and 4 games on Olympic size rinks ... Canada's record in these types of tourments not played in North America isn't great ... Its good but not great ... That
concept makes it interesting ...
I guess my real problem with a series like this is what will it prove? As I mentioned, we play the Russians and other countries all the time with medals and world championships, etc. on the line. There just isn't the anymosity against the Russians like there used to be. As Phil Esposito said, he would have killed to win that series. That was like a war between the two nations. Bobby Clarke went far enough to take out their best player in Kharlamov. Since many of these players now are teammates and play against each other all the time, I don't think there would be that same intensity. Especially with nothing really on the line, except for bragging rights. That's just how I feel anyways, maybe others would like to see this. For me it just gets a little old and tiresome.

Why not have another Summit Series?

I bet they will have another one of these and then in 2008 hockey will not have a World Cup tournament.

It wouldn't have the same excitement as in 72, but would still be far better than watching NHL crap. I would watch it and I'm betting the ratings would be awesome. The NHL is trying to improve it's product and succeeding to a degree, but it's still not worth watching. The only hockey that gets my attention is the international variety where something is at stake. I would rather watch women's hockey than a regular season NHL game.
I grew up loving hockey, but it's been turned into a bush league game by the goons, assholes like Don Cherry, and greedy owners who have figured out the only way to make money is by selling more franchises thereby dilluting the product. It's a shame because hockey was once a great game.

The point of the summit series was our best vs. their best (on a cold war backdrop). We see our best and their best every day now and see them playing for their countries all the time. There's not even a good political personality to it. The olympics are a big enough deal.

Now the US vs Iran would be good tv - though it would probably have to be soccer.

....but every once in a while there is a diamond among the lumps of coal. I think tonights Habs/Pens game as about as intense as you will see in the regular season...and the game was probably even better than it seemed to me because I can't stomach that over the top ,everything is "amazing" asshole Pierre Mcguire. And Gord Miller certainly isn't much as an announcer. I am not a fan of either of these teams, but that was one helluva game, from the opening faceoff butt end that Crosby got , to the shootout winner.

It was funny when they had to turn off Pierre's mike because Yarko Ruttu kept saying 'fuck' when he was beside McGuire who was between the benches.
