It should be illegal to keep primates as family pets.

I just saw the crazy lady that owns the chimp on the Today show.

She's got a point, though. How many humans go crazy and kill a bunch of other humans?

Interesting how much the chimp loved baseball. As he was in New England, he was likely a Red Sox fan.

Would this have a connection with his deadly final rampage?.

I thought it was illegal. But since I was not sure I did a quick search. It is determined state by state and it looks like it is pretty well even across the board.

I understand that the owner did have him properly licensed.

A major problem is that male chimpanzees become increasingly unpredictable as they grow older. No matter how much care and affection is given (and in this case although "Travis" was not in a natural enviroment, he was treated as a child and was certainily given a great deal of love and affection) it is like playing Russian Roulette but it's the chimp who is deciding when to pull the triger and where the revolver is pointed.

Just heard an interesting story on TV which said that chimps will willingly kill even close members of their clan in order to rise within the hierarchy of the group.

Attacked woman is still in grave condition. Senseless.

They are in fact quite violent in their natural environment and will readily kill monkeys and other smaller animals as food-prey. The fact that other male chimps in the clan are as violent and as strong is probably what keeps some kind of check and order in the group.

The chimps you see on TV shows are invariably young animals which have not reached puberty and are thus far more docile.

Just because they have human-like attributes does not make them cute monkey-versions of us.

Boy it's a tough one, and I'm not trying to push the woman off the train, but from everything I've heard her injuries are so severe: massive facial disfigurement, loss of most if not all of her fingers (and perhaps the loss of both hands) it frankly might be a mercy if she dies.

I recently read an article, discussing that chimps in West Africa have been observed making spears from a species of vine, to use in hunting monkeys - the first use of this short of tool making seen other than by people.

Totally agree, plus snakes and other reptiles. I have a horse and dog but they are harmless.
And I have three snakes and a turtle and they are completely harmless too. My cat could hurt me worse than any of my snakes and dogs kill and maim more people every year than snakes do.
