Fellows and dolls:

Do you bother with trip cancellation insurance or just go with health insurance when flying outside of the country?

What's the best way to go?

Cheers,
Jack

I used my Platinum visa. I read the info with it and it says it only covers Travel accident to 500k. i.e. if you get hit by a tsunami we'll pay your family up to 1/2 a mill.

Instant update: I called and found out that I have the "no fee" platinum which gives the accident insurance above. the $110/year Platinum card gives the Medical and cancellation insurance. Also you are still covered for medical expenses out of province just by carrying the card with you.

I will be switching soon.

Thanks for your help, RR. The travel agent quoted about 260 for both tickets for medical coverage and trip cancellation. 50 for just medical for both parties.

Cheers,
Jack.

I buy the deluxe package....and both of us are covered at work...and covered by my TD travel gold card...I am so paranoid about getting hit by a truck or something when I'm away, and having to be flown back to proper hospital, I figure the combination of all of them should be enough...

***note to anyone who likes to scuba dive...I heard of a guy who was diving in Mexico and got a very bad case of the bends...no hyperbaric chamber in Mexico...they flew him to Miami from Cancun...cost of helicopter ride...$58 grand in USD...ouch...

Also, you have to get special insurance to cover you if you scuba dive...and note that any injuries incurred while doing any "extreme" sports...parasailing, hangliding, etc...will not be covered...

It's cheaper with the Gold/Platinum travel insurance for the year if travel more than once/year and longer out-of-Canada terms. A lot of the travel plans plus life insurance don't cover extreme sports. Read the fine print. Hospital cost are outrages outside of Canada. Like you said travel insurance benefit from work, may pay for getting sick outside of Canada even personal travel, will pay for out of country hospital and emergency fly back to Canada.

The Air Med flights from/to Canada would be cheaper if your friend's bends was not as serious.

goodtime, hospital charges are outrageous inside Canada as well; it's just that the taxes we pay—which some think are outrageous too—mean we never see them.

Jack, just check the age limit for medical, I think it usually is around 65 or 70.

I use CIBC AeroGold, which on top of insurance gives you Aeroplan Miles.

Cancun is just across from Cozumel, and Cozumel has a chamber...it may have been in use at the time?

I agree that if you are a diver you should have additional insurance through Divers Alert Network.

Not sure about the Cozumel chamber...I read about this in the divers section on www.cancuncare.com

I just figure if I can afford a $3500-4000 vacation, I can afford an extra $269 to cover both of us in case of a medical disaster..

You also got to watch plans that exclude pre-existing medical conditions....farking insurance companies!!!

As do I; however, I believe it is called trip interruption insurance. I only had to use it once - I was in the GTA in April 2003 when Pearson ran out of de-icing fluid. Needless to say my flight home was cancelled.

What makes my experience so great is that it was a free flight to begin with since I got it using my Aeroplan miles. Regardless, the insurance still covered my accomodations and meals for the night, as well as my transportation to the airport the next morning. Can't beat that!

Oldjones, I know all too well our medical system are costily with friends in hospital management. Even though high taxes, at least our health care system is equitible for poor/seniors get the necessary medical care. Unfortunate part is year of insufficient funding will cost more to fix our health care system.

Jamaica-luvr, I know. People with pre-existing conditions tend to gamble with no medical coverage while outside of Canada as so few, if any, offer coverage for pre-existing conditions.

CAA

I've found that CAA travel insurance to be one of the cheapest around. If you are a member of CAA, I would give them a call for a quote.

Switched to Visa Preferred Gold. It has Medical and Trip Cancellation insurance. Same as the Platinum card but has 4 more days grace period. Go figure.

Cheers,
Jack.

Is it with Royal and what is the fee?

:)
$110 for the first card plus 30 for the other.

Look here:

http://www.rbcroyalbank.com/cards/personal/gold_p.html

exact same features as the platinum but has 4 more days grace. I don't get it. Why bother with the Platinum?

My wife saw the new card and is preparing to wear the stripe off of it..........

*sigh*

I think I need a massage....
