It's stupid to hobby in NYC.
Go to Greeley Square and meet a Korean student in any, ANY, place to eat.

Personally I tend not to engage in hobbying in most parts of U.S., but previously a member "Patron" had already offered his recommendations on this subject. You can assess his comments as cut-and-pasted in the following:-
"This is the group of independents I use in NYC. They are expensive and screening is significant, but they are my favorite group in the world. They are obviously unique, but if you are going to pay that much more than Toronto prices, you might as well get something not as available in Toronto. On the less expensive (and obviously fewer services side compared to the prior link), several guys on merb rave about this place. I know you wanted independents, but I don’t have a big list of those.
