I am sending a Word document via internet and I am not sure what type of programs they have at the other end; it is being sent to a large corporation. Is attaching it in Word form okay or is there a better format?

Thanks in advance.

Two questions...

but first, I'll send it as is.

1) How would I save it as PDF? Use Distiller (I don't have)? Paste into PageMaker (I do have) and save?

2) I see a number of 'text' options when I 'save as' in Word. Would I just use the one that simply says 'text'?

I'd just send the doc.... MS Word has become a standard- no one should have any problem opening it.

If you are paranoid, and are concerned that you don't want anyone being able to view any of the editing history of the document, you might want to resave the document. Just copy the entire doc and paste it into a fresh new word document.

(not that I've ever been bored enough at work to open a word document in a text editor.... ;)

Trust me, Word is ok. Unless that large company happens to Apple.

Not even aware of this. Just didn't know best way to go. Other questions are asked to learn a bit more.

all, sending word documents is never safe.
when I receive them, if it is something trying to sell me something, then I delete them, and consider the sender to be incompetent.

Use HTML, or PDF.
If you don't have Distiller, then get openoffice.org, and install that.

Shinyam, you are VERY WRONG.

Do I need Distiller to save as HTML? The company has a location on their website where I enter information and attach the document. They have solicited for the information I am sending them. When I just tried to submit it, it asked if I was sure I wanted to parse the doucment. What does that mean in computer lingo?

It depends on what you are sending. If it is a resume, I always send it in WORD and it is the preferred medium from my experience. If it is a marketing document, maybe pdf or html is better. What type of a document is it?

Resume. They have listed the job and have a dedicated job web site location where all is entered. I can attach it or paste it into a box. I didn't want to paste because the formatting is lost. But when I submit as an attachment I get the 'parse' warning. What does the 'parse' mean.

If you have an option of sending by word, do it. If not, use the text box to cut and paste and use spaces to format it. Usually they come back and ask for a resume in word. Not sure what they mean by parse. I have not seen that usage in sites like monster or workopolis.

regular dictionary says 'to break down; giving the form and function of eah part." But that doesn't help.

I'll wait until tomorrow to send it. Maybe someone will provide some additional info overnight.

Thanks again.

I would not worry about the parsing message. It is probably a message by the tool they use to upload your resume. Good luck.

At my company, even if a resume is sent in Word format the HR gang converts it to text. That way when I get to see the resumes they all look the same. A lot of people put a lot of effort into making their resume look nice with bolding and tabs and all kinds of stuff, but I never get to see it unless the individual brings me a copy at the interview (which is never necessary at that point).

Ultimately you probably won't impress someone with a resume that looks nice - it's the content that matters most.

Having said that, if you really want to hang on to your resume's look & feel with the formatting, send it in Word. The other end will have no issue opening it.

Good luck in your job hunt!

If anyone wants a good, free program to convert any file into PDF I recommend pdf995 at http://www.software995.com/.

The "parse" message means that the program is prepared to interpret some sort of formatted file. Parsing just means the act of sorting the formatting commands and the text into their appropriate pieces. However, that message isn't very useful if it doesn't tell you what type of formatted files it is expecting to parse.

I would just send the Word file. Every big corporation (including Apple) should be able to read it. And if they can't they probably won't hold it against you and just ask for the format they want.
