TORONTO -- This is not the better way.

Shame on the TTC for ordering driver Dino Oroc to hang up his uniform after he left his busy Queen 501 streetcar Wednesday afternoon to give chase to a man who had reportedly just sexually assaulted a female passenger on his route.

According to police, the streetcar was heading eastbound on Queen St. when a woman told the operator that she'd been sexually assaulted on the car by a stranger who had just exited near John St. The victim went to chase after her assailant and his union says Oroc didn't want her to go alone.

The 10-year veteran called transit control to contact police, put his flashers on and followed in pursuit, worried that the woman may come to some harm. Oroc, a marathon racer, got as far as Richmond and Peter streets before losing sight of the suspect.

Good on him, right?

Not according to his employer. The rules say that operators are not to leave their seats, let alone their vehicles, unless someone is in imminent physical danger.

"He's been relieved of duty," TTC spokesman Brad Ross said. "On the face of what we know today, the proper procedures and protocols were not followed and we have to make sure they are."

Transit union president Bob Kinnear is astounded that the TTC would rather quote the rule book than commend a driver who went above and beyond his duty to help a customer in distress.

"Is this their idea of better service - to sit in our seats while passengers are criminally attacked?" demanded Kinnear, head of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113. "They have a policy and it's cut and dry, black and white, for them."

Oroc, he said, was trying to ensure his passenger wasn't harmed. "I'm quite proud of this operator," he added. "He should be commended for what he's done and not penalized and fired."

Kinnear said the TTC's action is especially discouraging at a time when the transit system is trying to foster a new attitude after years of customer complaints. "It's frustrating for us because I encourage our members to help out our passengers. We're the eyes and ears of the city. We're the keepers of the city."

This punitive treatment of Oroc will only set that all back.

"I can guarantee when we discuss this at the Sunday meeting, hundreds of operators are going to tell me, 'We're not going to do nothing, we're not going to get out of our seats'."

TTC chair Karen Stintz didn't return a call for comment.

Quite mindful of the bad optics, especially on a day the TTC just unveiled its new streetcars, the TTC spokesman took great pains to insist that Oroc hasn't actually been fired - yet. Relieved of his duties, the driver must appear before a disciplinary hearing where the various penalties - from reprimand to dismissal - will be considered depending on his record and the circumstances of the incident.

"Operators are not to get involved physically with any customers, that's the job of the police," Ross explained. "To chase somebody down the street is what the police are for."

By the strict letter of their policy, that of course is true. But should Oroc really have just remained at his post and let a distraught victim out alone on the street with her abuser without ensuring her safety?

You certainly don't want TTC vigilantes, stopping buses and streetcars and subways to chase down ever possible criminal who may cross their path. But we also shouldn't penalize transit employees who indulge in the very human response of wanting to help their fellow citizen. What kind of message does that send?

A message of drive on by.

And who can blame them? Knowing they can be terminated for going the extra mile for their passengers, we can likely count on the same, old surly attitude we've come to know

It's all been resolved. Nothing happened to the TTC operator. The whole thing was a joke to begin with. So what, a streetcar driver pulls up to a stop, sees a man beating up a child or woman and he's not allowed to leave the car to intervene?

Karen Stintz and TTC should do what is right, instead of doing what protect their political reputation. The TTC Operator should be a hero for the heroic thing he did.

Dino Oroc, you are a Toronto Hero!

I was watching CTV News at 6PM. Apparently, the police don't think the woman was sexually assaulted. There appears to be more to this story. Stay tuned.

Glad to hear the driver has been re-instated.

His job is to drive the streetcar and enforce the rules ON his streetcar. The jerk left the streetcar, you phone the police and let them handle the matter, IMO

Seeing a person getting beaten on the street isn't the same, of course then you should try to help the person and stop the assault.

While this driver was trying to play hero, all on board and those waiting for the streetcar got put on hold and he didn't even catch the guy--what if the jerk had a gun and shot back--that happens here in the states.

I wouldn't call the driver a "hero", but I also don't think he should have lost his job. He saw a confrontation unfold, he heard allegations, and he chased a guy who was fleeing. Maybe he shouldn't have done that, but it's something a lot of people might have done. It's right that he got his job back.

Why are you labeling Dino Oroc a jerk? I think it would be wiser of you to not label him at all if you choose to take a neutral stance.

The driver should receive a civic award. And f**k the TTC.

fuck that... The TTC should be sued for failing to prevent the assault from having taken place in the streetcar in the first place. They should have undercover guards in all cars.

oh and the whole city should boycott TTC for even thinking of disciplining the driver

TTC chief was interviewed on CBC this morning. Emphasized he was taken off duty while they talk with him, not 'sacked.'

He said that traffic control wasn't informed, nor the bus passengers. His main points were that the driver needs to mind the bus first, and that the ttc can't condone their employees putting themselves in harm's way.

I got the feeling that they had no intention of taking any further disciplinary action, but can't really celebrate what the guy did, in case the next guy fucks up and gets himself or others injured.

CBC guy was good - pressed him on why this was any different than the random unexplained coffee pitstops.

I'll bet his fleeting celebrity status nets him a number of job offers better than streetcar driver. There's another old saying "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

Here is the latest update from CTV NEWS. The police said THERE WAS NO SEXUAL ASSAULT. The two individuals bumped into each other. The woman immediately screamed SEXUAL ASSAULT and verbally abused the man. Women, stop screaming SEXUAL ASSAULT every time someone bumps into you on a jerky overcrowded streetcar or subway.

More people should help in difficult situations and that's all this poor guy was trying to do. In many similar situations people do NOTHING.

As far as leaving the street-car, well what if he had to go to the bathroom, he would leave his street-car as well. Not like he totally abandoned it and didn't come back.

Police investigation of the 'assault' determined it was an overly-sensitive reaction to an overly-intrusive squeeze-past and the angry confrontation was more an issue than any arguable assault. Clearly management can't simply ignore a driver who pursues people with the vehicle then abandons it for a foot-chase. They have rules, and justifiably suspend people who break them, while they sort out whether there is or is not a valid reason for doing so.

Amazing how many people can't recognize a teapot, just because the media shout, "Tempest!".

The whole thing is way overblown.

The Streetcar Driver in question is back on the job.

As to the validity of the sexual assault or not, who knows what happened. "Sexual Assault" means too many things these days. The definitition of rape (which is a hugely different thing than some guy grabbing some chick's ass (sorry to be politically incorrect)) should be brought back into the the legalese of the nation. When I first heard "sexual assault" on a street car, I thought some guy had whipped it out and was jerking off on a woman, or maybe attacking her. Pushing past some chick who refuses to move is not sexual assault.
