Train wrecks in Ontario are very rare. Hope they don't find any more bodies.

I have taken that route many times, gives me a cold chill to think of all the people thinking that the day was going to be just like any other. My heart goes out to the families of those that died. :(

3 Via Rail employees are dead after a passenger train from Niagara to Union Station went off the tracks

http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/02/26/burlington-train-derailed/

Commuting to Toronto will be a nightmare!
How about kissing the ground because you last minute decided to take the go instead. One of the most insane experiences. Smoking doesn't kill, if I hadn't of wanted the extra 10minutes I would have opted for via. craziness.

The picture itself does not look that bad compared to many other train incidents. I guess the dead must have suffered head injuries from being thrown around.

Trains are still VERY safe. The accident rates are much lower than other means.
While that's true, I'd rather be the master of my own fate. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to be in control of any vehicle I ride in.

Condolences to the families of the deceased.

3 employees eh? who thinks they were comitting suicide?

train travel is fairly safe here... if this happened in an asian country like india, EMS would be pulling out dead bodies in the 300+

Odds are, it was a track issue.

There is no bridge at that location.

So you have a broken rail (quite possible), a switch in the wrong position (quite possible if there is a switch at that location), a broken switch, a collapsed culvert under the embankment, bad section of ties (quite possible)

From the photos, the track is as straight as an arrow at that point. So it was not a case of the locomotive going too fast.

Highly unlikely that the train ran a red because there were 3 guys in the locomotive, impossible that all three would have made the same mistake.

That track is owned by CNR with VIA Rail renting running rights from CNR, so CNR would be responsible for the maintenance of the track.

I have a friend who works with VIA that just lost a close friend that was an engineer on this ill-fated train. He would be devastated to see such a cold statement from an uninformed member of the public.
It was an accident, plain and simple. Why taint the memory of three workers by even suggesting that they put the lives of so many passengers in jeopardy so that they could commit suicide?

That type of question disrespects any employee of VIA or anyone that works with the public in general. People with this train of thought have just joined the list of TERB members that are true assholes.

My condolences to the families of the deceased.

It was reported that the train was switching tracks at the time. The train event recorder has been removed so they'll be looking at the data.

didn't yo mama never teach you to hold back judgements? Mine was just a question/speculation... With the investigations on the way, no one is sure what exactly happened. You could be right .. I could be right. Don't be an asshole.
