Anyone get by Rogers' download limits?
I was dl'ing some torrents last night and always after a fairly large download, my basic surfing is slow, IF I can even surf that is.
Anyone figure out a way around this, so my downloads, don't effect my cable connection at all?
Pricks, you'd think you can do what you want, since you're paying for the service. What do they care? pshhhh...

From what I've read on another thread, Rogers has caps on downloads/uploads whereas Bell does not.

Can someone confirm this?

you mean after the DL was finished?
did you make sure the torrent was stopped? because you might have been uploading like crazy, that usually KILLS your internet surfing

After I DL, I check my UL ratios, then if it's relatively decent I turn off the torrent altogether.
I really doubt Hell Sympatico is unlimited. They're highest, high-speed sucks shit anyways. Remember, I used to work there and even at head office the speeds sucked.

from what I know, Rogers doesnt have caps, but you'll get charged after a certain amount....dont ask the amount cuz I cant remember, but its like $7.99 for the next ?GB.....im sure if you search hard you'll find the answer on their website.

Rogers sent me a letter telling me that if I exceeded the 60G cap in a month, the service would slow to 128K for the balance of the month. That way, you can still do light surfing and check e-mail.

I am on the $50/month plan, don't know what they call it.

They sent the letter in May but did not carry through on their threat for June, July or August. Or, if they did, I never noticed.

So, there is no extra charge for exceeding the cap in my plan.

I'm on Bell Ultra and I'm quite happy with it
I get actual dl speeds of 2.7 MB

I've had only one interruption the past year, it lasted for 3 to 4 days

Yeah, go with someone else!
Actually, there was an article last December that stated that Rogers would do two things in January of this year:

A) get rid of their newsgroups
B) rate-limit bit torrents - meaning that they are specifically 'choking'
torrents.

Rosie's unfortunately stuck with Rogers shitty service; they've completely monopolized the market in my area. No one else is allowed to offer us Internet.
Bell is far superior!
Everyone I know that was on Rogers have switched to Bell.
It's incredible how much better things are with Bell's service!
These people can download 3 or 4 entire movies in just a few hours.
One friend downloaded a 32Gig compilation for me in just 2 days.
He could NEVER do that when he was with Rogers.

I concur. I'm stuck with Rogers. The first torrent is OK at about 50 kb/s. Then the next one it drops down to about 10 kb/s. And then I have to take a break. After a couple of days I'm at 50 again.

Ya well, watch your bills like a fucking hawk with Hell Sympatico/Mobility...TRUST ME.
I worked there and they tried to fuck me out of $1300, I managed to get $1000.
The other $300 was apparently "out of the time frame alotted" to complain about any billing errors. I WORKED THERE!!!
But ya fuck Rogers to. Anyone wanna start up AN ISP???

With sympatico (not the ultra) I've had it stop itself and other internet activity. It is easy enough to fix though by disconnecting, waiting a few seconds, then logging on again.

Acanac

I recently saw an ad for Acanac -- through google there is a promotion on:
http://acanac.ca/google-promo.htm

Fortunately after I switched from Rogers to Sympatico, I chose Sympatico's no contract rate. I'm going to switch. No ports blocked, no DL limit. Sounds like a good deal.

Anybody heard of them / tried them?

I'm on rogers and download torrents..... surfing hasn't slowed down. But downloading speeds have been variable usually the dl and ul rates are about 40 kBps.

But at my last place I did notice that sometimes I would have to unplug the modem or router to get the speed of surfing and dl torrents back again.

Don't know. I have Sympatico DSL. I have been downloading at least 50 gig/mo with torrents. Takes me about 1 to 2 hours to download a movie. I signed up for 30 buck plus per mo for a yearly contract. I don't know what I am allowed nor have I been told, my defenese. So far been ok. If there is a limit I would love to know.

ps I hear France and Japan can out download us 5 to 1 as a standard, bloody foreigners.

Rosie hears ya, however, these companies aren't dumb...
They've posted it "somewhere" (i think it may even be fine print on your bills), so pleading ignorance will not hold up in a court of law.
The saying "ignorance is 9/10's of the law" holds true for these contracts.
Nice try though.

Do you mean kb/s not kB/s? 1 kB = 8 kb if I remember correctly. So a 40 kB/s = 320 kb/s, which is damn good for torrents. But if you really mean 40 kbps, that really really sucks. I normally get speeds up to 200-300 kb/s on well seeded torrents.

Rogers is suppose to be 800 kbps. Have you used the TCP patch to fix Win XP (if you use XP)? Microsoft limits the number of connections to 10, so even if a torrent has thousands of seeds, you can only connect to 10 of them at a time, thus a slow speed. With the patch, you can connect to much more, and improve your speeds.

The accepted wisdom on torrents is to limit the DL speed to 70% of your total capacity, so that UL will have the remaining 30% to use. At 800 kbps, your DL can theoretically reach 570 kb/s -- if Rogers wasn't such a bitch about torrents.

Yup I'm reading the units right..... kB/s but as I look at the current rate it's dipped to 13 kB/s DL. Can't really follow the rhyme or reason just goes up and down but for extended periods it was saying 40.

As for what am I using? I'm using utorrent. I don't think I installed a patch for WinXP.... tough to say I sometimes update without reading the specifics.

Oh yeah I should also point out that the stat I gave was for total downloading not one torrent.
