What do you think about toronto having 2 nhl teams?

(ex: lakers and clippers)

I figure you will still have enough people going to the Leafs, but can you sustain enough people going to the Leafs2?

Like thats ever going to happen. The Leafs will not let any one or any team come into there territory. It's just not going to happen.

The way the league is set up its cost prohibitive for another NHL team to set up. Thats why Hamilton cant get a franchise even though it would have the support of its fans.
Plus, then Ottawa would want one.

You are most likely right but that was not the question. Fan base wise and business community, do you think Toronto can support an NHL team? I for one believe without a doubt it can.

...which cities...

...already have more than two teams...?

New York - Rangers and Islanders (and New Jersey Devils).

What makes this situation possible?

Population and money. Both of which Toronto has for hockey.

Theoretically, yes Toronto has the population to support another NHL team, but do we really want another. I do not think for one instant that Leaf fans will give their devotion to another team. There are also other points to consider:

Would they build another stadium, or play in Hamilton?

If the Leafs are not willing or able to fork out the $$$ for a winning team, what will the chances of a new team be being able to compete and survive?

Now if they brought an NFL team to Toronto, I have no doubt it would be a huge success. It would probably be the beginning of the end of the CFL however.

Very good. There are alot of people that would go to NHL games but can't right now. And it does not just have to do with money. Fact is there are not enough tickets in this city for the NHL. This would also stoke a fire under the Leafs' asses to get serious about building a competitive team. Win Win Win situation for the fans.

Not the topic of this thread.

What I want to know is why does the media always mention Hamilton as a candidate for an NHL team when they can't even keep up the financial support for a AHL team and a OHL team??

To me, if there were to be an NHL team in or near the GTA, I'd think that Mississauga would be the greatest candidate. It has the strongest economy of any Toronto Suburb and the highest population outside of Toronto. Mississauga also has a very lively hockey scene.

Though, I do have to agree that the Leafs wouldn't allow another team competing in their market. Personally, I'd love to see it!

I would love to see Mississauga have an NHL team as well. But Hamilton already has the arena, albeit some improvements would have to be made. Hamilton doesn't support AHL and OHL so well because they always have thought of themselves as a MAJOR hockey market (ie. NHL). The suport for an team in Hamilton would be overwhelming.

Actually n_v, the question was: What do you think about toronto having 2 nhl teams? And my answer remains the same, the leafs won't let any one into their territory. So thats what i think.

As for the New York and Los Angelas areas having more than one team
Out of the 3 New York area teams only the Rangers sell out or even come close to selling out. The Devils and the Islanders draw about 8,000 to a game. Thats part of the problem with Gary Bettman and the NHL. Besides teams in Nashville, Pheonix, Tampa Bay, Miami , Atlanta, Carolina, amungst other places. There are not enough hockey fans in the New York area to support three teams. There are not alot of Ranger fans but the ones that they have are very loyal. There are not many Islander and Devil Fans. Also there are not enough hockey fans to support two teams in the Los Angelas area. Toronto will never have two teams, the leafs are afraid the other Toronto team will win the cup before them.

This is a pro hockey town and the city can certainly support two teams but that's never going to happen.

Hamilton wont get a NHL team due to the Toronto Maple Leafs
And the Buffalo Sabres

Doesnt matter how much overwhelming support they get in Hamilton

I don't think anyone is disputing that. Topic of discussion is if there is fan support. On which case my point stands.

You forgot to mention "based on fan support". The poster is not asking about the opinion(s) of current NHL ownership clubs in the area.

No matter how much we would want another Team in Toronto the Leafs will still be number 1 in everyones hearts and i dont think the majority of the people would want another team in the city. We dont want to be like NY or LA so why would we start. Plus where would it go East Scarborough???
A NHL team shouldnt go in Miss it should go in the Shwa (Oshawa) they are going to have a new arena for the Generals soon so there u go. Plus Oshawa is the new Motor City in North America so call them the Motor City Madmen. I dont know if i heard that before probably have....... im too tired.
