TORONTO -- Ontario police services reported the lowest crime rate in Canada for 2012, according to Statistics Canada figures released Thursday.

The agency reported four per cent drops in the province in both the severity of crime according to its Crime Severity Index (CSI) and the crime rate, compared with the national decline of three per cent in the same two categories.

The CSI has decreased in all listed Ontario cities except Brantford, Guelph and Windsor. But Guelph has the lowest CSI in the province and second lowest in Canada after Quebec City.

At the other end of the scale, Windsor had the highest increase of CSI at seven per cent while Brantford had a one per cent increase, giving it the highest overall CSI in the province at 92.2 per cent.

Toronto has the lowest crime rate of listed cities in Canada with a seven per cent drop in 2012, showing less crime than Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary and other major cities.

Thunder Bay, which has the highest crime rate in Ontario, also shows the highest drops in both crime rate and CSI, while Greater Sudbury and the Kitchener-Cambridge-Waterloo areas also show significant drops in CSI.

Statistics Canada says police-reported crime in Canada has been on a steady decline since peaking in 1991 and has hit its lowest since 1972.

I feel reasonably safe in most parts of this city. Our police force have done a commendable job in weakening the gangs and reaching out to at risk communities. I will give former Mayor Miller credit where its due, he helped initiate this type of policing. Wait did I really just say that :)

I grew up in small town Ontario and we left our doors unlocked and us kids went everywhere without adult supervision. I was surprised to see that Toronto is actually safer than some Ontario small towns. Things have changed and for the worse.

Toronto still has higher murder rate than small towns though. Small towns have many minor crimes like theft and drugs related to poverty. Toronto is more on gang violence and guns.

Michael Moore visited Toronto a few years ago where he visited an area where people didn't lock their doors
I think your facts are wrong CM. It was Sarnia and not Toronto. And if you think that wasn't set up you're about as stupid as the average Mikey Moore fan.

Small towns getting poor and drugs are pervasive. poverty is the #1 factor in crime rate.
I would argue and say that drugs are the #1 factor in crime rates, particularly violent crimes.

It is hard to say. If the murder rate is 4 per 100k in some small town of 4000 people, you would see slightly less than one murder every six years. That is a low murder rate, but it would still be a 25% higher rate than Toronto at 3.2 per 100k.

It is hard to say whether these small towns are really safer because there aren't enough people to have reliable statistics.

Many mid sized Ontario cities have a higher murder rate than Toronto: Sarnia, Thunder Bay, Belleville, London, Brantford, Sault St Marie, Hamilton, Chatham, Peterborough, Sudbury, Windsor.

Toronto is big so at 3.2 per 100k there are a couple of murders every month which gives the illusion of being more dangerous than s place with a murder every six years, even though the rate is lower.
