Toronto Councillor says "Shut the Fuck Up!"

Okay maybe she didn't EXACTLY say that, but she sure as heck looked like she meant it.

Yo Fellow Terbites!

Did any of you catch Coun. Maria Augimeri and her altercation with the president of the Ancaster Ratepayers Association and told him to "Shut up!"

I don't know how to set up one of those Polls for you guys to vote on....

But how many of you would say that she doesn't get voted back by her Ward during the next election??!

Or would you think she'll survive this latest debacle?!?!

She has always been arrogant, from my personal observations of many years. She has even publically and inappropriately humiliated one of her campaign workers. Such trash does not deserve to hold public office.

To me, the guy needed to be told to shut the fuck up. Did you see his ranting? Some people have ridiculous expectations about their government. To my understanding as well, there is partisanship going on behind all this. The guy was a competitor of hers in the local political scene (not for office but for influence within the ward) and went overboard to publically humiliate her. She should have held her temper of course but the old guy is an idiot too. Its not as though he was some random citizen crying out for help - he apparently had an agenda to "get" her, and obviously he did.

What pisses me off is that if the press liked her more, she could just as easily have been portrayed as a strong leader trying to take charge of a situation and focus efforts where she felt them needed, not where a competing local body wanted them focussed. Media gets to call the shots, unfortunately. I say, good for her. She will pay the price though.

Her point, after she told him to "shut up", was that she was there to comment on the death of a firefighter during the incident and this wasn't the time or place for him to make his opinions known; trying to capitalize on the death of a fireman for his own agenda. The media hasn't commented that he is a politico in the ward, so I hadn't heard that but it makes sense. he certainly suceeded!

Yeah, too many people just read the headlines—ignoring the bias of the source—then form their opinions without the least effort to find the facts.

This is why citizens get so frustrated with their politicians.

You're right, all she wanted was to express sympathy in relation to the death of the firefighter, and to explain that his death wasn't directly related to the explosion and fire. That kind of public sympathy is a great PR move, and costs a politician nothing.

Unfortunately, that's not what we pay them for. They are paid to solve problems just like the ones ensuing from the explosion. However, she is not the kind of politician who knows how to solve these problems, nor has she any real interest in spending her time trying to solve them.

While her detractor was clearly politically motivated himself, all he really did was expose this reality.

And no, the City is not responsible to "fix" everything for the residents. They are responsible for:

  • cleaning up the debris (including asbestos) from publicly owned property
  • reviewing city planning criteria with respect to the location of these facilitiies
  • monitoring and addressing any public health considerations arising from the explosion
  • addressing any special policing needs arising from either mandatory or voluntary evacuations
  • advocating to other levels of government on behalf of residents with respect to matters within their jurisdiction (propane industry regulation, Heath and Safety standards enforcement, etc)

If she had even half a brain, she should have addressed these matters with that group of residents.

On the other hand, maybe they're getting exactly the sort of representation they deserve.......

I lived in that ward many years ago. She and her ilk have not done much in all the years of her reign, except to line their pockets and sit pretty. That is the sad truth. However, that does not mean that there is any one who would be guarranteed to be better than her. That is the sad truth. If and ewhen she loses, there will be no mourning over the loss of her job. She will find something through cronyism, that is for sure, as did her friend Rick Morelli, and others.
