Scarborough Centre city councillor Michael Thompson is facing two counts of sexual assault stemming from alleged incidents this year in Bracebridge, his lawyer Calvin Barry confirmed on Thursday night.
Barry said the charges are “on the lower end of the spectrum” and says Thompson will be “vigorously defending these baseless allegations.”
Barry said Thompson’s accusers are two adult women.
“He hopes for an exoneration soon as this matter winds its way through the Bracebridge Ontario court of justice,” Barry told CityNews in a phone call.
“He (Thompson) made a short appearance at the Downsview OPP attachment in Toronto to pick up his paperwork, and he will not be in court on a return date as I’ll be appearing on his behalf,” Barry added.
Thompson is a longtime Toronto politician and sits on numerous committees and boards.
He’s the chair of the economic and social development committee, is a member of Mayor John Tory’s executive committee and is one of Tory’s ceremonial deputy mayors.
The mayor’s office said it is preparing a statement on the matter.
Thompson is seeking re-election in the upcoming municipal election. It’s not clear if his legal issues will affect that.
CityNews reached out to Thompson on Thursday night but did not hear back.
