ok -the season's over.

THE TML didn't get it after the lockout. You need speed. You need hustle. The days of the old clutch and grab NHL is over. The Leafs made some unbelievable signing mistakes and extensions in the off season. They wasted dollars under the cap on a lot of players.

So which piece of driftwood would you float, buy out or just get rid of?

Allison, Belak and O'Neill come to mind (the top three minuses on the team) adn send Wilm back to the minors -that's where he belongs.

speaking of wood... wellwood looks like a good young prospect ... the leafs should write him off and trade him away any day now ... gotta be some 45 y/o available...

Leafs gotta get rid of the dam kids.

Fergie fucked up!!

Boy, did this guy read the new NHL badly!! He now has about 22 million to make things right....for me;

1) Get rid of Allison; apparently a grouch in the dressing room, and an ice time whiner, not to mention his amazing lack of speed

2) Trade Domi, or better yet send him to the Marlies....with an ego like his, he'd retire and they would have his salary back to spend on an actual hockey player.

3) Buy out Eddie.....thanks for the good years, but we signed him up for one too many

4) Offer McCabe exactly what they gave Kablerle, he doesnt deserve more. It is a good thing he was racking up all those one timer goals and points, it made us either not see or quickly forget the poor defensive zone play and numerous giveaways. A guy with his pp points and he is a minus player?? tells a story doesnt it?? If he walks, up the ante a bit for either of Chara or Redden......better value.

5) Give Jeff O'Neill one more year......you have to lose a brother or sister to truly appreciate what he has had to deal with.

6) Leave Ian White with the big club.

7) Make sure we work the young guys into the mix. More 5 on 5 ice for Stajan, more minutes for Wellwood, PERMANENT wingers for Mats.

8) Let Tellqvist go. He proved in Montreal that he can't take pressure when the cards are down. Sign one of the free agent goalies (Curtis J comes to mind, we could get him for about 2 million I think) to play maximum 50 games or so or even to platoon/mentor with Aubin.

9) Quinn has been great, but its' time. Maurice had the Marlies prepared 100% of the time and the fact that each of the callups did a surprisingly good job speaks to the fact that he deserves the big job. You dont take the Carolina team he took to the finals without being a great coach.

10) Give Ferguson one more year. I think I can see his plan to develop not buy coming to fruition. He deserves one more, then take a hard look.

What say you folks?

Fergie

Jimmy,
Ya started by saying fergie f'd it,
then say give him one more season (thats 4 seasons) !!

heres food for thought , Kick Quinn upstairs make him GM (he did better than dryden and fergie)

make Maurice the coach ... (Carolina is a good example why)

Stand pat. Do not make any changes. As a business model MLSE is THE most successful sports franchise in the world. Do not mess with success. It is a business and the ruthless business decision that needs to be made is stay with what you have as it is so successful.

well your bang on... winning the cup won't increase revenue (enuff to justify the cost of good management etc.) .. if the fans stayed away and ticket sales went down .. the leafs would win a cup within 2 years ...

But having said that .. you've ruined the on ice part of the fun....

It is too bad that there is not a concerted effort by the season ticket holders to put pressure on MLSE. With the majority of those being held by Corporations it is fantasy to think that they coud all get their act together enough and withold purchasing next year's tickets.

There are a untold number of tickets held for genarations... people feel if they give them (tickets) up, they may never be able to get them again...

thus MLSE.. laughs , raises ticket prices

In the Ballard days , in the early 80's people stayed away (boufght tickets but skipped the games ) Harold just saved money on clean up crews

they dont need a business model to be successful, kids right out of school could run MLSE,this is a LEAFS town and there is more demand to watch games than there is tickets, fans go if they are winning or not its not management that makes MLSE successful its the fans in toronto willing to watch the leafs no matter what. and as a hockey team they are no way near being successful with the money they have at there disposil they should have won the cup ten times in the last 30 years instead of 0 times you call that a successful franchise. The only reason they still make money is the toronto fans are just happy to watch them play, any other city they would have no one watching and folded as a franchise.

As a business, MLSE is unbelievably successful. But then again they go with the PT Barnum philosophy on business operations. MLSE is out to make money.Period. They are not obligated in any way to ensure a winning team / franchise. As far as the TMLs go -the fans will pay to see a shitty team. They've been doing it all my life (and I'm almost 40!). I never did understand it. This team has had marginal success since 1967 ....67! Jesus Christ even the Canucks have been to the finals since then....so have the Ducks, the Hurricanes, the Panthers, the Kings OMG and since 67, the Leafs? Not once to the finals - not one time.

If you had a chance to overhaul the whole show -obviously you'd start from the players, but; I think management needs a new profile as well. Who would you can?

But then again, in the end this is just all chat. Fans blowing off steam for a team they love but doesn't love them back. MLSE has never cared about the fans -the new rules with the salary cap will be another excuse for them to short change the fans and put another shitty team on for next year.

I don't by that business analogy crap. No denying the MLSE is very profitable but I have to ask what kind of business would close up shop eight weeks early just prior to the busiest time of the season, If they were interested in maximizing profits then they would ice a team that would give them an extra ten or more post season home games in which the profits would be much much greater.

How much would have it cost to retool the Leafs with real players? (Cap room in mind of course). All the years the Leafs would pick up a player here, a player there nobody substantive -just to draw a round or two from the playoffs (if they were that lucky).

MLSE makes a shitload on merchandising and how are the tv contracts doled out? Is there revenue sharing there? No. -that's why the Leafs have their own cable channel, almost a pay per view set up. It's not like the NFLs profit sharing program.

Six or maybe ten playoff home games?(Ten is really optimistic) Gate revenues from that are peanuts. ok so you lose a few bucks on merchandising too but in the long run -it is more PROFITABLE to not spend money on players, not spend money on development and jack the ticket prices to the point where a regular joe can't take his kids to a game.

In the long term if you want to maximize profits -you keep your fixed cost as low as possible (salaries), you charge as much as you want for a substandard product (the market can and will absorb $150 per seat ticket prices) and milk everything else -outlandish concessions and parking, merchandising and such.

The fact that they didn't make the playoffs is a testament to their flawed business plan -the old game is gone. No more clutching and grabbing and no more buying second tier playoff "help". Now you have to dress a team that can win, every night. Case in point, as much as I enjoy watching Domi -you don't honestly think he could get that contract anywhere else? MLSE knows Domi is a fan favorite, so to keep the press and for the most part the fans happy; they signed him to that 2 year contract. With a cap -that is a waste of dollars....or was it? He can still sell jerseys -he can't do shit for the team but can do wonders for the organization. That's the difference.

Today's Sun Article

Anyone see the article? In it, Richard Peddie tells you that HE will be creating a report to the MLSEL board, rating all of the executives, etc. involved in the hockey and basketball operations.

He hired JFJ, so, if as many believe, JFJ is responsible for this sorry team, what do you think are the chances that he, RP, implicates himself?

Also, what are the chances that he recommends that a hockey president be appointed? Bob Nicholson, who did such a great job with Hockey Canada would probably jump at the job.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

I have and always will be a Dave King fan, or even dare I say -Ted Nolan.

The overhaul should start at the executive ranks and work it's way down. I feel bad for Sundin though. His career is really winding down and he doesn't have a prospect of getting his name on Lord Stanley's mug.

first things first...

pat quinn...buh-bye. not for any reasons other than the fact he has been here a little too long. the players know his little nuances, and tune him out far too often. quinn is a little too reluctant to make changes, either in-game, or from game to game. he relies on his old and tried methods, but, in this day and age (and with the players he has to work with), most do not work.

john ferguson jr...if the leafs could somehow scoop up dean lombardi as their new gm, they should jump at it. failing that, i don't like fergie jr., but dont see much else out there for the leafs to go out and get, to let him go and still pay him.

richard peddie...the biggest problem both the leafs and raps have. but, he makes MLSE money hand over fist, and that is all that counts for the beancounters.

when it comes to players, the leafs have a very good young player in alex steen. he will be the next captain of the leafs. kyle wellwood is a nice kid too, a solid second line player (reminds me alot of stevie sullivan). matt stajan needs a coach who will let him play, he will be another good serviceable player for years to come for toronto. quinn simply doesnt seem to want to play him, for whatever reasons.

jason allison? what did the leafs expect? they knew he was never a swift skater, that he was coming off a very lengthy layoff, due to injuries. they got out of him, for the money, their value's worth. he put up good point totals. i would not bring him back though. same for jeff o'neill. sure his brother's passing was a factor, but his game was on the decline in carolina already. tie domi, the guy is a waste of time. he thinks more of himself as a player, than anyone else does. get rid of him, very useless, and selfish. antropov, please. can the leafs not see this kid will never amount to anything, at least not in toronto? nik needs a change of scenery, and the leafs need him out of here. sundin is just fine, so is tucker, and ponikarovsky looks like he may be serviceable. chad kilger has his role, but i do think the leafs just overpaid to keep him around. sundin needs two permanent wingers.

on defence, offer mccabe the same as kaberle, as another poster pointed out, or goodbye. i would love to see toronto sign redden, very underrated. aki berg, khavanov, see ya. give the kids a chance, see who sticks it out.

goaltending...toughie. aubin is not the answer. he had a good rookie season in pittsburrgh, but has never been able to stick around in the NHL since. leafs need to go out and get a serviceable veteran in the nets. cujo is there, and he wants to come back. dwayne roloson may even be there, if edmonton doesnt sign him up. tellqvist??? leafs gave up on him too soon after the montreal losses. they were not all his fault, though he failed to step up when he had a glorious chance to do so.

two guys i really think the leafs should look at, are new jersey winger patrick elias, and tampa bay d-man pavel kubina. leafs need a good compliment for mats sundin, and kubina is a very good nhl d-man. there will be some other bit parts around, but, hope the leafs dont overpay for it. i tell you something else, i dont care for the guy, but i'd rather have sean avery around, than domi and belak.

Get rid of both JFJr and Quinn...

The Leafs have a lot of money so use it to convince Scotty Bowman to come out of retirement for a couple of years as your GM...

Let him hire his own coach.....

All that said if JFJr and or Quinn are still around by this Thursday then they will both be back next year...:(
