What are my options (beyond a VCR) for recording TV programs? I don't currently have Hi Def or anything beyond regular cable, but it's not out of the question.

TiVo is amazing. Many more features and cheaper than Rogers or Bell. You can't go wrong!

Bell is currently advertising "Unlimited" capacity on their HD/Dual Tuner PVR. The unit they are marketing allows you to purchase a Lacie USB attached harddrive to the box.

It depends on what you want to do with it really. I know many burn to dvd from TV (why, I dunno lol).....As stated, you can buy a PVR and hook it up to any cable or sattelite service (I say PVR, but I really mean an HDD recorder). Basically they are just digital vcrs.

You also might want to look into some of the TV tuner cards and software. You might be able to use your PC as a PVR. Only problem with this is you may only be able to record whatever station the "tuner" is tuned to.

There's a thread around here where Rub was asking about recording video and I posted a few links to cards that allow you to do this. Rub was after HD which isn't available for recording as yet. SInce you're in SD (shit disturber lol) only you could be ok.

Here's a link to a bunch at futureshop:

Hey Data, yeah I thought of those reasons but I was also thinking that you still have to buy the DVD recorder and if you were just recording things like "UFC unleashed" it could get pricey after a while. (even at 20 cents each for blank DVDs).

VHS were even more expensive...what's 20 cents, when people pay $10 for a pack of smokes, $35 for a case of beer, and have nothing to show for it.

I just researched it yesterday as I was wondering about it, and there are High Def models of TiVo. I was thinking of getting one to use with an antenna.. but I'm not sure if it's worth the $350 or so it costs..

DVD +- RW goes from about a bit over a loony per disc .

Recording from TV to DVD works for me. My main LG recorder works fine so far, no major gripe . Probably will upgrade to an hardrive DVD recorder though.

Yes they do have some models out which are HD.

they do have high def but not supported in Canada. I have been shopping for a PVR and just got TV. Its the only service that I know that removes the commercials from your shows. It also allows you to transfer your shows to your computer. I did see an LG DVD/HDD for $200.

They only thing that sucks with tivo is that I some how can't get it to work with my bell service. I just might have to switch to rogers.

Thanks

If you have a spare computer to install it on, go with Mythbuntu and a decent video capture card (e.g. Hauppauge PVR500). You can record, remove commercials, burn to DVD, etc.
