I know it’s not a new phenomenon, but I’m noticing it more often as an option when using Interac or whatever for take-out.

Assuming good service from placing the order to picking up, do you guys tend to tip?

Let’s say aside from Starbucks or whoever your barista or choice is.

====

Couldn’t think of a way to simplify it, but if you do “usually” or “Always,” what do you leave? 10%? 15%? 18%? Higher?

I consider myself a decent tipper, especially in contrast to people that make a lot more money than I do, and either tip crap or don't tip at all, but I don't tip for take out. They're not doing anything other than handing you what your buying. Some people still only tip delivery guys a few bucks, but I tip them closer to the 15% rule as they have to put up with a rain, snow, etc. I think delivery guys are much more deserving of a tip than someone who;s processing take out orders.

I was at Denny's about a year ago getting take out, the take out girl tells me the price, I think it was like $17.00 after tax, so I give a $20 and she goes "do you need any change?" I look at her like "why the fuck wouldn't I want my change?" Some of these millennials that work in restaurants don't seem to know the difference when they are waiting on a table, or they're helping out at the take out counter. The fact that she would put a customer on the spot like is even more sad. Shouldn't even asked. You automatically give the change back and let the customer decide if they want to leave you tip. Sad part is, this has happened to me a bunch of times.

You see this a great deal in Asian establishments.
If there is a tipping culture and people are so gullible why not exploit every avenue?
With the minimum wage increases some sit in Asian places have attached forced gratuity to their bills.
I've read stories of waiters and owners of Asian establishments actually running after customers outside the establishment and onto the street to ask for higher tips/more etc.

Went to pick-up some Chinese food the other month and on the debit card machine there was a spot to add a tip . First time I've seen this .

I tip on delivery. I like Skip The Dishes as it has tip percentages at 10,15 & 20. Plus the option to add your own amount. I use to do delivery back in the day and I know it is a pin in the ass job.

On pick up/take out - not generally.

I’m not sure if I see this at more Asian establishments than others, but I definitely see it there.

The weird thing is there is if you’re talking about China, Japan and Korea, there’s almost no tipping culture. Thailand, it’s mostly your loose change. India, definitely a tipping culture, but I don’t ever recall tipping if I’m taking out food in India.

Tipping for delivery or restaurant service is a given IMO. I like that it’s built into Skip the Dishes and similar services.

Why the fuck would anybody tip for take out? The cost of service is already built in the price of the product.
W.R.T. delivery most places already have a delivery fee so when I tip for that it's usually just 5-10%.

I just had Domino's the other day and it's a question on the machine. Same with picking up delivery from various restaurants. I wonder if in some cases it's just easier to have it for all the machines versus just the ones they take to the table. Plus I know in some restaurants (especially Asian), you are given your bill at the table but you go up to pay and it's the same cashier for pickup.

Either way, if I order and I pick up, I never leave a tip.

The only time I've been asked this is by servers or bartenders. I understand the question but you can also see the few times they are doing it automatically versus looking at the bill and the amount paid. If I hand you a $20 for a $10 bill, clearly the answer is going to be "Yes, I'd like my change".

Your Denny's example though reeks of entitlement.

How about buffets do you tip at buffets? All they do is just take you plate away and add water to your glass.

Restaurant hourly wage + tips = at least $20/hr working at a buffet. Probably more like $30.

Who knew that in the year 2018, a person clearing tables, pouring drinks and administering the bill would be worth $30/hr combining wages and tips.

Heck, in 10 years if there's enough wage increases and pressure cooker tactics to increase tips to 25%, maybe the avg compensation will be $40-50/hr all in.

Maybe I'll quit my office job making 6 digits and work at a buffet bringing dirty dishes to the kitchen. I was both both a busboy and a waiter way back in the 90s and it were jobs any moron could do. I was already clearing tables and cleaning food out of the carpets when I was 15. Who knew that type of shitty job would be worth so much more now.

On weekends I usually get take out from a restaurant, I stop in for a beer or two while I wait. I've usually tipped ~10%. They need a tip for the bar service but for the meal they just rang it in and carried it from the kitchen to the bar. Tipping on just the beer she served me seems cheap but IMO not worthy of a 15-20% tip as if she was waiting on me at a table, so this is my compromise. Is that fair?

Is tipping a thing here or is it another crappy American import taking hold here? And what's up with the min wage hike? Is tipping still part of the equation after that?

Um. The machines to pay are set up for it for regular service. So they don't change them just for takeout.

There is no obligation to tip on takeout. I worked in the industry and it's not expected really.

Delivery yes. Pickup no.
