If anyone could give me ideas as to where I can intern or work in the media/advertising, communications and/or marketing industry, please PM me. I am finishing my degree by next year summer time and I'd like to get started now with an internship or work.

Please PM me with ideas if you're well connected in those areas within downtown Toronto.

Thanks.

what you should do is run an agency or brothel unless you want a change of scenery

CITY-TV seems to be a good place for ethnic women (and men) and many eventually end up on the major networks.

A tough tough industry. You will likely be expected to intern for a couple years.....with NO PAY.

its a ruthless industry...and in this economy..even worse.

Don 't give up your day job just yet.

Make contacts.....in YOUR CURRENT WORLD...it might be a good place to start with contacts!

Good Luck!

A couple of years ago, one of my nieces thought that being a TV news reader would be a good career choice. She thought they only work an hour a day (when they are actually reading the news). inside job, no heavy lifting, good pay (Peter Mansbridge makes $800,000 annually), etc.

Unfortunately its true in many industries, although it occurs at higher percentages in the media. A lot of the TSN Sportscasters, the guys and girls who have to drive around the city (on their dime) to collect the audio clips you hear on the radio are mostly done by unpaid "interns". There's an internet marketing company here in Toronto that boasts being Canada's fastest growing Company does not pay their Social Media Marketing Manager (they rotate interns). The example's are quite a lot and there are pro's and cons supporting each case. IMO, if you are working, you should be paid.

Tons of choices and opportunity in either of those areas. Most every firm requires a marketing/commuications dept.; what's great about those roles is that your skills/experience are transferable regardless of what industry or sector you seek employment in. Get laid off from a marketing position with a financial services firm? No worry, you can find work in the marketing dept. of a real estate firm (to give one example). Same duties, same concepts, different industry. Almost as universal as accounting, IMO.

You're absolutely correct.

LOL. Are you serious? You can do way better in the private sector! Don't ever join the government Mila unless you've exhausted all your options. The City of Toronto from what I hear is all about nepotism in gaining advancement. When you're dealing with profits and losses in the private sector you think twice before engaging in that bullshit.

For instance, the city just fucked up my water bill and this effected 300,000+ water bills per a csr I spoke too. Guess what the reason was? - they inputted the wrong rates.... The shocking thing is that this is not the first time that they've fucked up my water bill!

I mentioned your comments to a couple that both work for the City and babe it sounds like you have insider information. Well, there's good family values for you on the City's dime.

Makes one wonder why the CBC costs so much to operate, when a good chunk of labour force is free.

And we all know in all industries, labour is the biggest cost of doing business.

One of my co-workers use to work for CTV many years ago. CTV would send a 3 person crew to film an event and CBC would send a 6 person crew to do the same job.

working in the public sector is only good if you are medicore at your job, youll get paid more than youre worth and have job security. if you are in demand you are better off in the private sector

The possibilities are endless but as with most industries, experience is king.

The first couple of years after finishing university are tough and I'd say pick an industry you see yourself interested in and grab the first internship even if its less pay or no pay. That should give you 6 months to a year of experience. It will be rough and you will learn a lot. Be creative and at the same time, show your employer that you have the chops to become full time and command ownership of tasks.

There are many internships - http://toronto.craigslist.ca/mar/ ( Just do a search for the word 'intern' )

Good luck
