I always buy a used car as they are by far a better deal

Is it time to buy new?

Any tips on how to deal with the sales people?

This one hot sales chick swore the "employee discount" was the lowest she could go

She kept touching my shoulder to make me trust her. Now I really do not trust her.

I am considering a Mitsubishi Eclipse 2 door hatchback

Very sexy and the only 2 door hatch I have seen

Priced at 25K

Can I get them below 20K ?

The price of pussy has not dropped but new cars must have

What about used cars has the price gone up or down or not moved?

I bought a little truck as replacement for one I have had since 95. It cost a lot less this time.

If Cash, just say that is my max ($20k) - what can you do? and be prepared to actually walk away.

Then they will do the "let me talk to my manager" routine

Then they come back and say " well he has never done this before but because you are so darn good looking we will give you a special deal, but you have to promise to tell everyone where you bought the car ... "

I wonder if they actually do go talk to the manager or is that just a standard sales ploy

The ONLY time buying used is a better deal now is if you are paying cash.

If you have to borrow then it is better to buy new.

For eg:
2009 F150 $32,000.00 zero interest.
2006 F150 $20,000.00 10% interest.
5 yr term
roughly: $2,000.00 per year interest for 5 yrs = $10,000.00 interest.
On the new truck ZERO interest for 5 yrs = $0.00.
Used: $20,000.00 + $10,000.00 = $30,000.00
New: $32,000.00 + $00,000.00 = $32,000.00

With the new, you basically get a bumper to bumper warrantly for 3 yrs and you can get the exact vehicle you want.

Like I said: if you're paying cash? Buy used. If you have to finance? Buy new...it ends up being cheaper in the long run.

(btw, I just bought a new F150 and they gave me $14,000.00 off list price now I will wait for Rub to chime in lol)

Just get a late 90's Eclipse GSX/Eagle Talon TSI. It will will likely spank the new eclipse in fun factor and maybe top end, and will cost you under $10k. The old GSX ran the old Lancer engine I do believe, so mods abound if that is your thing.

The new eclipse is sexy but there are waaaaay nicer cars for that price range, or below it.

Late 90's-early 2000's BMW M3 can be had for around 13-15k used now and that is basically the nicest car you will ever realistically get to drive IMO, and will definately spank the eclipse in every concievable catagory (top end, handling, acceleration, fun, prestige...)

New cars always seem like a massive rip off to me because they depreciate 20-30%+ the minute they drive off the lot. You can probably get a 5 year old dream car for the price of a just ok car that is new.

The "time to buy a new car" will imo be when GM and CRY get it through their heads that nobody will pay their "reduced" prices at 30k, 40k etc and they start selling their surplus at fire-sale prices like 10k for a new midsize car... it will probably happen someday not too long from now.

Anyone who falls for that "zero interest" line is naive.
You may get a 30k car at zero interest. If i walk in, I can get the same car for 26k cash. The interest is already built in, just not advertised.

you forgot something

If you have the cash does not mean you have to use it

you can still take advantage of the 0 interest rate when you buy new and put your 30k in the market. It is like getting a free loan of 30 k is it not ?

Plus paying cash must get a further discount as the dealer does not have to carry a free loan

plus the interest on a used is spread over 5 years so the present value of it is far less than 10K

You mean you went from 32k to 32 -14 K ? Or did you go from 32 + 14 k to 32 k ?

How did you do it please ? inquiring minds want to know

I thought the Talon was a lemon?

I agree plus you do not have to pay that $1,300 "delivery" charge but if I can get a great deal then go new

Got the 5 year warranty and finding a solid used car takes too much time

The question is can I get the great deal and what haggling techniques do I use ?

Thanks for the feedback

The MSRP on the truck was $46K. They gave me $14K off, which came to
$32,000.00 plus they put in a bed liner and back up sensors.

And yes, I tried to tell a co-worker about the zero interest on the vehicle when he had the cash but he wouldn't listen to me. He kept saying over and over "I don't want to make payments". I said "throw it into a 3% savings account that allows you to make pre-payments from. You will get 3% per year over 5 yrs on your (albeit dimishing) balance instead of paying it all out now. 3% in YOUR pocket is better than 3% in someone else's" but he wouldn't listen....

That is hummmmmmmmm let me think

14 ~ 46 times 100 = 30 % discount ?

or is it

46 times .3 = 13.8 and 46 - 13.8 = 32.2 K therefore

yup

30 % off plus bed liner also you do not pay taxes on saved 14 k :)

And you did not pay cash correct ?

so Eclipse is worth 25k times .7 = 17.5 k and a free bedliner and if I pay cash the interest I save the dealer is around what ? $1000 ??? so I should pay 16.5 K and tell him to keep the bedliner ?

How did you do it ?

Yup, that's about right....30%.

I know ford is moving trucks as fast as they could get their hands on them. I think it was erindale ford in mississauga had a bunch advertised at that price with a little less on the options (I have 20" rims and pirellis and a few other things) so they basically matched the price. My sister in law works as a receptionist there so they gave me friends and family discount but I don't know the exact amount of that (but it was available to everyone but it ended yesterday).

The last truck I leased from them they gave me a $12K discount. It was $34K final price.

I think they were/are really trying to move trucks.

I wouldn't say that.

I negotiated the price of my new car in 2005. Got about 5% off list.

Then brought up financing it through the dealer.

I know in the US they have trade in your clunker deals, and more than a couple had buy one get one free. (buy a corvette or something and get a sub compact for free).

The auto industry is hurting. But I heard from Ford that due to the plant shut downs cars are scarce

Trade in your clunker - the fed bought it - is over

Dumb idea now nobody is going to buy as everyone who was gonna has already bought

consumers would have spent money elsewhere so it artificially helps auto industry for short term and hurts everything else

We all know people like that. At some point you just have to say "go ahead you know best" and let them pay.

Some of the "fine print" actually says that.

or

They have a zero percent price and a cash price which is thousands less than the zero percent.
Only idiots fall for that old trick.

What knowledgeable purchasers do is negotiate the price of the vehicle, and shake on it LONG before any talk of how one is paying for it.....
