Time Dilation Question?

So I just saw Interstellar and loved the first 70% of the movie...all up to the point before they went inside the black hole.

I loved how they explained and showed theory of relativity, especially that they needed to consider it's effects like fuel, oxygen, etc...while deciding on the best mission.

On that the first planet they visited their couple of hours on that ground was 20+ years to the guy waiting for them in space craft just above the planets orbit.

I have two questions that I can not make sense of....

1st - How could their bodies survive such a strong gravitational pull from the balck hole on that planet. This did not make sense.

2nd - how would they appear to the guy floating in space and out of the gravitational pull.If he had a powerful microscope and looked down on that planet, would he see the crew on the ground moving extremely slow to a point they seemed to stand still. Can't really comprehend how this would work?

I thought that this movie was based on some solid theories...just hoping fellow geeks can help me make sense of this.

I am good with the principles of time dilation just a bit confused how practical it is if we had a black hole near by to orbit.

Based on this article...http://www.astronomycafe.net/qadir/q285.html it looks like answer to question number 2 is that they would appear like they were standing still...

Also looks like in theory you could survive a particular type of black hole...just don't know if the 20+ years to couple hours is possible with the tolerance a body can handle and gravitational forces....

Black Holes are theoretical. By definition they cannot be observed only their effects can be observed. Not everyone believes they exist.

The answer to question 2 is to an outside observer their time (the people he is observing closer to the black hole) has slowed down. To the people he is observing they do not notice any time differential.

Two things effect time

1 speed

2 gravity

The theory of general relativity says that light emitted from an object coming toward you will come to you at the same speed as light emitted from and object receding away from you. This is why leaving two car lengths is never enough.

Correct. That is the essence of relativity. Light always travels at the speed of light therefore it must be time that changes.

Yes, light is a constant.

Does that mean that you would see their light exactly as it happened on that planet where 1 hour was 7 years since nothing can change the speed of light.

So WTH would you see then for the 20 something years if you were in that space ship observing the crew on the planet under influence of the black hole.

Would they appear frozen then or keep moving?

But since black holes bend space it would take light longer to travel to get to you...so WTH does this mean for looking at the people on that planet as they descend?

IF YOU COULD SEE ONE OF THEIR CLOCKS IT WOULD TICK VERY SLOWLY FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE.

I believe that answers your question.

While light travels in a straight line, it also follows the bending of space so it travels in a straight line within space. This is the essence of time travel into the future. If you could travel in a straight line while avoiding the bending of space then you are travelling ahead of the light and into the future.

This explains everything! Now we know how MJL can be at 10 different places at the same time...she has figured out the secrets of the space time continuem thanks to her lethal combination of sexyness, cuteness, and wit, combined with the gripping power of her blizzaks with a fresh new set of steel rims enough drive all our our gravitational pulls out of control and force our littlest of members to defy gravity due to her forces of attraction...wow this explains everything so perfectly...it all seems to make sense now thanks to a simplified theory of relativity explaining why Jessica'ss combo is so lethal.

The reason their time is 7 hours and the other guy 20 years is because they are travel at a much faster speed thant the guy they left behind.

so the light will take 0 days to 20 years to reach him if he is abe to see it.

We can only see close to 14 billion light years out to the Univers because that is the light that has reached us, but maybe one day when more light reaches earth we will see 20 bilion light years into the universe.

Using only imagination here and no science....

Heaven, definately Heaven
....since nothing can change the speed of light...
Ah, but anything currently conceivable by humans cannot change the speed of light.

When in fact, the speed of light can be changed. Use sound as an example.
The speed of sound is different in air, water, and metal. But considered a constant within
its environment.

For light, what's conceivable is Einstein's constant, currently. However,
the speed of light can be challenged, like Quantum Actions. Through this, it could
travel faster in another environment other than space.

For questions of The Twin Paradox (i.e., traveling closer to the speed of light, and then returning
to one's twin now greatly older than the other), see the reciprocal of The Lorentz Factor.

Okay, enough of that. Time to get laid again.

Because it's Hollywood and not a documentary.
It's based on accepted science....

How much did they stretch the science is the question. Can this be possible.

I don't think anybody has the answer yet on how much a humans body can handle time dilation...

Time dilation is nothing new and GPS satelites constantly need to adjust their time to account for time dilation...

In additional to the physical time dilation I believe that there is the mental time dilation each one of us go through that effects the physical, and how quickly we age.

Examples...
- You get home from work, plant your self on the couch and time passes very quickly, you barely remember what you watched. Go to sleep, wake up, only to have your day fly by again and not enough time to do anything, to finish your work, for your hobbies, family, friends, etc...you always feel your time is running out.
- Now flip this scenario and as soon as you get home try to work out for an hour, pay your bills, call your friends, play with your kids, keep your mind active without giving your brain a chance to slow down and your time dramatically slows down
- another example we all unfortunatelly know people who soon after retiring from work pass very quickly. They lose their purpose in life, their mind slows down to a halt, and as a result their time speeds up and they die
- another example you take shrooms and minutes seem like hours, or hours seem like minutes
- race care drivers. Or if you ever drive on the autobahn at 200km/hr and plus for like 40 min try stopping quickly and getting out and you will notice very quickly how slow everything moves and your brain is automatically supercharged because the situation forces your mind to think quick.

All the above are examples of time dilation.

My favourite example includes MPAs, each time after I see an MPA it feels like my mind is kicked into turbo supercharge and I can do everything 3 times as fast. I can look at a grocery list once and remember everything like it's still on paper, think ahead how I am going to put the groceries on the belt, to put them on in bins and buggy and pay all without causing a delay to the cashier while thinking on the most efficient route home, how I will prepare all the fruits vegetables and meats ahead of time for the whole week and play with my kids after without them even noticing I was gone...with the MPA motivation I notice I can drive on the highway and know exactly what every single driver will do and go in and out of traffic like they are standing still. Unfortunately this only lasts maybe half a day until I let my self back into normal time and struggle with daily things like everybody else.

There is observable relation to how fast your mind thinks to the speed of your own time.

This time stuff fascinates and can be controlled through various methods such as driving fast MPAs etc...it also affects how quickly you age or physically deteriorate.
