Mickey Lolich, the hero of the 1968 World Series, outdueling Hall of Famer Bob Gibson in Game 7, passed away today at the age of 85. It was a fabulous playoff for Lolich who pitched three complete games. For many of us baseball fans in the Windsor area, he was one of the best lefties in Tiger history, right up there with Hal Newhouser. I remember the 1968 Tigers including such greats as Hall of Famer Al Kaline, Willie Horton and Norm Cash as well as notorious bad boy Denny McLain.
Mickey won over 200 games and played for a long 16 years, winning 20 games twice and losing 20 once. He was a hard thrower who threw 300 innings four years in a row and struck out 308 batters in 1971.
RIP to a good old boy player. Your doughnuts and coffee were great, too.
