Written apology found beside Houston hit-and-run victim's body

LEAGUE CITY, Texas – The mother of man killed in a hit-and-run Sunday said someone left a handwritten note of apology beside her son’s body.
"They said that they were sorry and that they had a family," said Roberta Jones. "But he had one, you know, and he was my family."
Two days after Maurice Jones was found dead in a ditch along Dickinson Avenue, police were still searching for the person responsible.
Police haven't release many details about the note, but it contained information that leads investigators to believe the suspect might be a woman under age 40 with a newborn baby.
"It's pure speculation that it was a female, but the handwriting appears to be of a female origin," said Scott Saldridge of the League City Police Department.
Jones, 34, was struck by a vehicle as he walked home from his night shift at a fast-food restaurant.

So sorry I ran you over and killed you. I'll pin this note to your lapel so your family knows it wasn't on purpose. Can't call 911 as they might charge me with something and I have a family, so I'm outta here.
and then there is this:
(CNN) -- Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth was charged in Florida on Wednesday with killing a pedestrian while driving under the influence, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade County state attorney's office said.
Authorities charged Stallworth, 28, with DUI manslaughter in the death of Mario Reyes, spokesman Ed Griffith said.
Stallworth is expected to surrender in court Thursday, Griffith said. The charge is a bondable offense, and bail is expected to be set at $200,000.
If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison.
According to Griffith, Stallworth's blood-alcohol level after last month's accident was measured at 0.126 percent, higher than the state's legal limit of 0.08 percent.
Stallworth was drinking at a Miami Beach, Florida, club early March 14, court documents say. He later left the club and went to a Miami residence for about 45 minutes before leaving in his black Bentley GT at 7:07 a.m.
He was driving east on the MacArthur Causeway, which connects Miami to the South Beach area of Miami Beach, when he struck Reyes, prosecutors said. Reyes, a construction worker, was crossing the eastbound lanes of the causeway. CNN affiliate WSVN reported that he was heading to a bus stop after leaving work.
Reyes, 59, was struck by the right front and fender of the car and suffered critical head, chest and abdominal injuries, according to an affidavit. He died a short time later at a hospital.
Stallworth told the arriving officer, "I hit the man lying in the road", the affidavit said. He said he had time to honk his horn and flash his headlights to alert Reyes, according to the documents. Police smelled alcohol on his breath, the documents said, and Stallworth provided a blood sample at the scene.

Ummm...why would the pedestrian, after getting off work before heading home, lie down on a highway? And how could a driver have time to honk his horn and flash his lights but not stop or swerve to avoid hitting the pedestrian? I've driven from Miami Beach to Miami on that causeway many times - takes less time to stop than it does to honk and flash the lights. Somethings smells here...oh wait, it is the driver's breath.
And then there is this:

LOS ANGELES — A driver hit two University of Southern California freshmen — killing one — and driving off with the other caught on the hood until stopping to let a passenger out to pull the wounded student off the car, police said Monday.
Adrianna Bachan, 19, of Santa Barbara, was killed and Marcus Garfinkle, 19, of Scottsdale, Ariz., was seriously injured around 3 a.m. Sunday when the motorist ran a red light and struck them just north of the campus.
Garfinkle was pulled off the car and the passenger got back in and it drove away. It was unclear how long Garfinkle was on the hood or how fast the car was going.
"He was heartless, lacked courage, had no regard for human life. This individual should certainly be behind bars," police Detective Jimmy Render said Monday at a news conference.
No arrests had been made Monday.
Garfinkle was in serious but stable condition Monday, officials said. His injuries were not specified.
Police said there were four or five witnesses to the hit and run, which occurred as the students were returning to campus after attending fraternity parties in the neighborhood. None of the witnesses saw the car's license plate.

Looks like guy ran over two people and sees one is still on the hood. Better pull over, toss the wounded one off the hood onto the ground, then keep on driving he thinks
