So disturbing on so many levels. Most troubling but least surprising is Correction's Canada efforts, thankfully unsuccessful, to bury the video record.

Over in LA some dude ran from the cops, other cops caught him, handcuff his hands behind his back and the other cop he took off from came up to the scene, claims to had seen a weapon and shot the guy in the back...now the cops forgot for a few days to tell the public the guy was handcuff....

Its all police abuse, cops taking the law in their own hands. You piss them off and they twist the law to get "even" with you.

Mistakes happen sure but most of this shit isn't by error, its their tempers out of control

The media is not telling the whole story. W5 (or was it the 5th Estate?) did a an hour expose on Ashley Smith a while back. She would throw urine and feces at the guards. She would spit at them. She would attempt suicide every second day. The media is only reporting the one suicide attempt that was successful. Where were her parents during all this time?

Media is trying to sell more papers. I've worked with troubled youths and can say to end up in a Federal institution, you have to be very violent and uncontrollable. I dealt with a kid to had tried to stab other kids 3 times in 3 separate incidents, and successfully stabbed one in another incident. What did he get? A no contact order and probation.

The whole story isn't being told here.

I have dated a couple of women who worked with mentally ill and/or troubled people and they were physically assaulted and verbally abused many times. BTW: Some of these "mentally ill" people are actually quite intelligent and are very manipulative.

I believe that and it explains why some cop lost control of their temper.

I'm not sure I could stay in control of my actions...but if she was that crazy, why was she in jail and not an a mental hospital getting some mental help ?

Not everybody has parents who care for them..oh sure, they come afterwards so they can sue :frusty:

Thats a story in its self. Cost are high cause not everybody can practice medicine, yet there are caring people who could help if they were allowed to. Just like how doctors for years fought the right for drugstores to give out flu shots, it happens now here in the states, not sure about Canada. Its all to drive up the cost, only they could safety give a flu shot they claimed.

I don't agree you can only help those who want help, drugs can change a ill brain...she might have had a medical problem drugs could had help....clearly she wasn't getting no help what so ever in jail

Drugs only work if they want to take them. Had a bipolar employee once who was on drugs. Was fine when he was taking them, but because he was feeling fine, he'd stop taking them and go off the rails. Would happen a couple times a year. He should know better, but it goes back to they have to want to do it.

She choked and strangled herself hundreds of times, often as ploys to get the guards in the cells where she could physcially assault them, not to mention all the feces that she would throw. There is surveilence video of her telling guards 'its your job to keep me from dying, you HAVE to do it" she would strangle herself so often that the guards on duty were eventually given orders to not enter her cell even if she was strangeling herself again. It is thought that her death can be called an accident, that she strangeled herself for stimulation and ALWAYS expected the guards to intervene, and that perhaps she didn't actually plan to commit suicide this time.
While I don't condone how long she stayed in the prison system and was not rather in a mental ward somewhere, I do believe they had the rights to have her bound, and masked, and tranquilized for their own saftey. I'd like to see how any of us would have dealt with her if we were also FORCED to deal with her on a day to day basis on our job. My mother works with severely mentally handicapped individuals that are frequently violent. We can expect the behavior from them, but mental status does not make the actions excusabl, and at the end of the day the personal saftey comes first.

Sorry you're dealing with mentally ill people. You need staff that is capable of not reacting in a malicious way. Staff needs to be trained to deal with sick people.
Sounds like a horror movie. She's killing herself and staff is watching herself hang and was told not to intervene. You're kidding me?

There is always shock treatment to the brain...and its not like the old days. Shock treatment is still used and with MRI's it can be controlled more. I think its given in smaller amounts today.

She was acting crazy enough, sometimes drugs aren't enough

Least she still be alive today and maybe acting more calm and less hyper.

If the parents do collect $ it be ashame, cause that money would had been better off helping her and others like her. In fact I rather see the money set aside for treatment for others then giving it to her parents. Lets start trying the help those who need the help..love ones die, it happens...many-many deaths are way too soon, for many different reasons, most folks get nothing-not even a chance to say good bye
