i was driving down the street, and im at a redlight, and i see a truck come up in the lane beside me and he talking to the car behind me. then he pulls up and he starts talking to me, tells me that hes trying to sell a couple home entertainment systems, and he could give me a good deal. so i say ok follow me, and i drive to a mall plaza parking lot, lots of people around, and he opens up the back of his SUV, and hes got at least 15 home theatre systems still in boxes and sealed. so he says hes from missisauga, and we are in Oshawa, and his boss sent him to pick up an order and the loading peaple put to many units in his truck, and he doesnt wanna drive them all back to missisauga. so hes like look at the price tag on the boxes they retail for like 4300.00, and he pulls out a catalogue with them in it, and hes like what is your limit on bank card, hes like most are 1000, and im like yeah but i just got my car fixed, and i have maybe 200.00 left, if not less, hes like if you give 100 ill give you a system, im like can i open up the box first to make sure its all there, and hes like well i already have 1 opened up. now im no fool, i know that the sealed boxes are probably full of bricks and other crap, so i say no thanx, not interested, so as hes pulling away, i take down his license plate number and make and model of his truck, and alert the police to what hes doing, because i know that im street smart but there are alot of stupid people in the world.....

He might have just been trying to fence off stolen goods.

I tend to mind my own business on stuff like that. Isn't my stuff that got stolen, lol,

But if everybody was like me

I have seen a scam like this before

often he will open one box (all the other boxes look exactly the same) and show u a great looking system

then he sells u a sealed box for cash and drives off. when u open the sealed box it contains a much less expensive system then the one u originally viewed

Okay, here is the complete answer:

First off, the scam generally is "they gave me too many at the warehouse" or similar, as you got here. Originally it was done with speakers, now it has moved on to "surround sound systems" or "home theater in a box".

In simpliest terms, these systems are shit. They are made in China with the cheapest components possible, and cannot for a moment deliver what they claim. Speakers to handle higher wattage (more than 10 watts) are fairly heavy. Not only do the boxes themselves have to be heavier (because of the amount of fibration and airpressure) but the magnets on the speakers needs to be very heavy indeed.

A PSB series 1 subwoofer alone (100 watts) weighs 23.0lb, the 500 watt versions weighs in at 71.6lb /each.

So if they are offering you a "600 watt" surround sound system, the box as a whole should weigh somewhere near 100 pounds. A crappy LG $199 system, with microscopic speakers weights in at 20 pounds. (see bestbuy).

What was in that box? speakers that could handle 10 - 15 watts, an amplifier without enough transformer size or capaitance to support any real signal, speaker boxes made of nicely painted presswood, etc. Totaly value? About $50 retail if you bought it at Walmart, but Walmart would never stock crap. Cost to them, by the container load, is about $5 each.

Oh, btw, the license plate will come back to a rental car. It always does.

That is the correct answer, as Jaycam said, known as "White Van Scam" Very popular and will still go on to many generations to follow...even when cars can fly.
