Im looking for advice.

If someone from Marketplace came into your home and knew what items they were buying because they had photos and they have eyes. Instead of taking a $50 item they take a more expensive similar item worth $500 and claim it was in error and that someone told them to do it.

What would you do?

Especially since they had to move the $50 item to get the $500 item out.

Suspiscious right?

Even if they apologized it would still not sit right.

I was out somewhere. I cant remember where and someone else was there to do it. I believe the person there for me was not interested in the whole process and wasnt paying attention and the guy saw an opportunity and took it.

The fact that he had to move the item for sale to get to the higher quality item is what pisses me off the most. It was right there. The guy and his wife are trying to act like hes completely innocent.

If I did that to them they would be furious. Theyre trying to act like hes some upstanding citizen and his reputation is ruined by this. they live in the slums and he stole from me. Upstanding my ass.

File a police report. Libel or slander claim is ridiculous. Where did you say or write anything about him? Even then it's absurd. In written form he has to prove he's suffered some economic or other type of harm from it, plus he'd have to spend thousands on a lawyer. And it's not considered libel if it's true.

You could try theft and trespassing if he came on the property and stole something.

Did he bring the expensive item back? If so leave it. Any further negative energy you devote to this will harm you, more than him.

Part of the problem was you were not there but had someone standing in for you. In that instance you should have had the item for sale near the front door or on your kitchen/dining room table away from everything else with your stand-in always nearby and not allowing the other people to wander anywhere in your home. Other than that, you can do as mentioned is to file a police report and see what happens.

I would ask the couple to return the item and exchange it for the correct one…or just bring it back and you refund the $50. It doesn’t matter if he admits wrongdoing; if they bring the item back then tell them it brings the matter to a close.

If they refuse either option then I’d call the police…at that point I think it can no longer be called a honest mistake and becomes a theft issue.

The police are not going to sh*t for $500 theft, the cost of their time is more than $500.
