Thinking of a tablet - need some help.

So here is my situation.

I love my blackberry and I use it a lot of a lot different things. I was therefore thinking of getting a playbook, more for pleasure but for some business as well.

My problem, there are a couple of things that I would love to be able to do business wise and I was hoping some members here can help me in seeing if these are possible.

First, I would love to be able to stick in an SD card after a photoshoot and showcase the photos right there for client. I know that the Ipad has a SD port, the PB does not. However, I can get a SD adapter with a micro usb port. Problem - I shoot in raw format. Is there an app for raw image viewing?

Second, I have to update sites and sometimes it is time sensitive. I know that PB has a LiteFTP and that would be fine. These are minimal changes and would usually be html based, but sometimes it is graphic based changes and would require a photo editor for PSD files to be saved into jpg or png format. This would be maybe 5 times a year max but would be helpful.

I don't want to carry a netbook and for the price of them and the amount of time they break down. I have done it before and I am not interested in it again.

I know that what I want to do is available with Ipad. They have photoshop. They have SD card ports, I am sure they have a raw format reader but I would prefer not go apple. But something similar to their Adobe Touch software would be prefect.

The iPad does not have an SD card slot. Unless you're referring to the camera kit add-on.

If you don't want an iPad, maybe you should wait for the new Windows 8 tablets due out soon?

Again the SD card port itself is not that important. I can work around that.

The ipad does not support SD cards out the box. The xoom supports does SD cards. I do not know if any others do or not. I don't know enough about the playbook to give you advice on it.

Not price limited, but I love my BB phone and all that it does for me. I am use to it. I have huge list of BBM contacts that I want to keep active. It only makes to me to go with a blackberry tablet.

Do you have experience with the PB? Can you tell me why it would be a mistake?

Sounds like you're going to need a healthy ecosystem with enough apps to support your business.

That really takes RIM out of the game, IMO. I'd be looking at the iPad or waiting for Windows 8 on tablets.

However, you sound like you really want your purchase to be a Playbook. I'd recommend asking on Crackberry Forums.

I don't know anything about photo editing on a tablet. These are very low powered devices. You can do simple things like contrast/saturation/weird filters but the real editing will need to be done on a PC.

There are two things i dislike about the Playbook (I have one) :
1. The apps don't know about directory structure. As an example, if you have 10 videos in each of 10 sub-directories, you'll have to scroll through 100 to find the one you want. alphabetically.
2. pdf viewers don't have search or an easy way to get to a page. again, an example, if your editor manual has 500 pages and you want page 150, you may need to turn 150 pages. if you'd like to find a keyword, you can't.

The browser is OK. If you can find one cheap, give it a try. perhaps the drawbacks i see won't affect you.

Apple supports both the SD card via a camera connection kit and NEF files. You can also use Adobe or iPhoto natively on the iPad. The new iPad has BY FAR the best screen if you want to show of high quality pictures....

The pictures will look almost as good on an ipad 2 as an ipad 3. Get an ipad 3 if it has something you need (such as 4g), but don't purchase based on the screen, it's a red herring for most people.

I agree with djk. Wait till the Samsung windows 8 ivy bridge tablets come out around fall. Itll be worth the wait, and all the suckers that bought iPads or android tablets will be licking their wounds.

I don't think a professional photographer who wants to show RAW quality images to clients is "most people", I think the new iPad display was made for someone like the OP.

Unless you're showing it to your pet owl, the extra resolution is nice but not enough to justify the extra $.

So what? Android has done that for years (as well as pretty much all the "icloud" stuff that has you so excited recently)

$100 is easy to justify if it's for business. I think the faster GPU and extra ram will help when loading 20mb+ raw image files as well.

OP, if you are going to consider the new iPad, don't listen any of us here...go to an Apple Store and ask them to prove to you why it's worth it or not to shell out the extra quid for an iPad based on your needs.

That's good advice, but I also think that apple fanatics blindly recommending the top of the line, latest apple product is disingenuous. There's a very good chance it will be her best option but one thing that's very lacking in this forum is objectivity..

Again, to the OP, if you're considering an iPad (New iPad or iPad 2), go to an Apple Store and ask them how an iPad can fit into your workflow. If it doesn't then that's ok, go and find something else that does. All I know is that at least one photographer has posted that the new iPad is great for showing off their work which backs up a couple of other review articles that I've seen. Here is what MacWorld says:

FWIW, I think that the review is a bit gushy but I know that photos on my iPad 2 are not as sharp as they could be. I'd be really curious myself to see how they would look on the new iPad but I am not going to shell out the $$$ for that.

Absolute fucking shit.
Few people in here are as objective as I am. I don't hide that I prefer android but have said many, many times that it's not for everyone. I recommend products from the complete spectrum and have even done so in this thread.
