I seen this on CTV Toronto news months ago.
A guy had his Lexus stolen twice this way.
They say the best way to prevent this is don't leave your keys near the front door or put them in a small metal box.

Yeah, and dont use your FOB to lock your car in a busy mall or plaza parking lot

I’m glad to see that what I do is already preventing this.

I stopped leaving my keys by the door ages ago. I park in my garage so you have to get through that and I never use the fob to lock my doors. Normally it is by the inside door lock or by the button on the outside of my door.

My keys stay in my purse all the time, I never take them out.

Simple solution RFID blocking pouch. Been using these for a while now. Many options to choose from.

I agree this story is quite old.

I remember vaguely hearing about it too, but stealing cars in shopping mall parking lots after you just locked your car is a new one for me

You can still reduce the risk. Lock the car manually and put the key in a faraday pouch.

Although I don’t bother when I park in malls even though my car locks automatically when I leave.

I also have motion cameras all around my house through wifi that notify my phone if someone is in the area wondering for the areas I selected to be monitored and upload clips instantly to cloud. You can get cheap cameras from Amazon that last the whole year on a single batter with cloud storage.

This article is WAY too much work...
You can physically copy a key fob from the comfort of your own home
There is no need whatsoever to go to a persons front door

As an example
This is a more legit site (check it out) but tons of darkweb ones will also do same thing
The ONLY diff between them is how much they care (eg the link provided will ask you to confirm ownership of vehicle before they clone your keyfob, darkweb could care less)

And no dont bother to PM me for links
If you want to figure it out its pretty easy to do

This is old news
Unfortunately car manufacturers are still using old technology that’s not very difficult for today’s thieves to circumvent
If really worried you can put an old school steering wheel lock ... or for better peace of mind try buying a shield for your keys so you won’t be vulnerable to thieves catching/stealing your signal

But you need the original FOB key to do that, dont you??

Old news. This has been going on for years. If you have an hour this talk is pretty good primer into how it works for someone without any physics or electrical engineering background.

Nope

Go read
ALL you need is the serial number of the key

They can rebuild your codes from that
Thats why I said its insanely scary

And again like I said this article is WAY too much work; if I actually planned to steal a car I would head over to local dealer and demo one
A bulk key fob is less than $20
I could probably drive 3 vehicles without any suspicion

Or even a car rental place; rent a vehicle and return it
Wait for next person to rent it and follow them to snag it

My Range Rover got stolen out of my driveway, my camera showed a guy walk close to my front door and pulled out a long wire and was scanning until they opened and started the car.
