When Julio Caesar built 2 walls during the Battle of Alesia: one to encircle the Gauls under the leadership of Vercingetorix and an outer wall to keep out relief army.
But by doing so, Caesar and his 60,000 army were hemmed in with nowhere to go: they had to fight to the death.
But Caesar prevailed in what is considered one of the greatest military victories in history. It's all on Netflix. Fascinating stuff.

I have been to Rome and seen the spot where Caesar was murdered. And of course the magnificent Pantheon and Coliseum still stand.
Every modern stadium uses the design of the Coliseum to usher spectators in and out at different levels.

The Crisis of the Third Century. Rome was on it's way out by 260 AD. The Emperor Valerian was captured by the Persian, he was used as a foot stool by the Persian King. When he died his skin was flayed from his body and hung up as a trophy at his palace.

Today one of Rome's most impressive features is the Aurelian Walls. Built 15 years after the Valerian catastrophe by, imho the equal of Caesar and Trajan, the Emperor Aurelian.

The USA, who's Constitution is partially based on the Gracchus reforms, must not make the same mistakes the Romans made.

Gene Roddenberry was an admirer of Tiberius Gracchus, immortalizing him further as the middle name of the legendary Captain Kirk. The Republic was throughly corruption and greed, Tiberius wanted to reform it from within. Unfortunately the oligarch Senate didn't buy in. Rome was beset by class and civil wars after Tiberius fell until Imperial Rome was established.

And it was Julius Caesar who wrote the immortal words Veni Vidi Vici after his victory at the Battle of Zela - present day Turkey. " I came. I saw. I conquered." Immortal words.
