Have we ever done a Stones thread?

There are certain songs linked to certain people, my good friend Phil McNasty brought one up. With his new gif, every time I hear this song, from Beggar's Banquet, Kaya Scodelario pops into my head.

Brian Jones goes out with a wallop.

Keith Richard's former girlfriend Anita Pallenberg recently passed away. She was the ultimate party girl, surprised she made 73.

Her song.

There's never been anyone like them before or since.

I've seen them live several times and when they are on, boy oh boy, they will blow any other band right out of the water (and when they're off, well, they're off). Tried to get tickets for their last show in TO and they were just stupid expensive. Like 1200 a ticket. Sorry, I still remember seeing them in their voodoo lounge tour in 94?? at CNE stadium. They burned the place down they were so good.

I love driving on hot summer's night just after the sun has gone down and there is this energy in the air. Put the top down and just crank this on the stereo like you're 21 all over again and hit the gas.

Probably one of my favorite Stones albums. interesting video in that it had some trivia on the background singer at the beginning.

I generally liked the Stones but found some of their music could be hit or miss for me. Also, I found at times that they could be kind of shitty playing live.

Other albums I like:

* Some Girls
* Black & Blue
* Tattoo You
* Get your Ya Ya's Out
* Numerous songs on other albums

Below is an interesting link to a pile of songs leftover from the Some Girls recordings.

Some girls was a great looking album cover. i have one of the original covers in my stack of LP's.

They were underwhelming at SARSstock but following AC/DC is a real challenge. I consider Beggar's Banquet and Let it Bleed to be their best albums.

Let's Spend the Night Together was a miss but they made up for it with vengeance.

Live with Me.

I got nasty habits, I take tea at three
Yes, and the meat I eat for dinner
Must be hung up for a week
My best friend, he shoots water rats
And feeds them to his geese
Don'cha think there's a place for you
In between the sheets?
Come on now, honey
We can build a home for three
Come on now, honey
Don't you want to live with me?
And there's a score of harebrained children
They're all locked in the nursery
They got earphone heads they got dirty necks
They're so 20th century
Well they queue up for the bathroom
'Round about 7:35
Don'cha think we need a woman's touch to make it come alive?
You'd look good pram pushing down the high street
Come on now, honey
Don't you want to live with me?
Whoa, the servants they're so helpful, dear
The cook she is a whore
Yes, the butler has a place for her
Behind the pantry door
The maid, she's French, she's got no sense
She's wild for Crazy Horse
And when she strips, the chauffeur flips
The footman's eyes get crossed
Don'cha think there's a place for us
Right across the street
Don'cha think there's a place for you,
In between the sheets?

The Stones didn't really care that they got riffed, I believe this is from Their Satanic Majesty's Request. Andrew Oldham was no so magnanimous, The Verve ended up with $0.0 from the song.

Mick Jagger was not so kind to his early girlfriends. In order to save her, Marianne Faithful had to be stabbed in the heart with an adrenaline shot. Mick showed contrition with Wild Horses, but how much of it is genuine is debatable.

Mick didn't want the end of a life on his hands. I wonder how he felt about Quentin Tarantino sending him up.

The Stones have great originality and did not have nearly as many bold rip-offs of other artist's work and then only acknowledging under legal duress as say Led Zeppelin. Starting a Stones thread has many merits but a Led Zeppelin thread may result in much unpleasantness.

That's because the Stones never blatantly ripped off what their sound is based on: Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. They mixed in enough English melodies to make their blues based sound their own.

The question of where Mick Jagger got his persona is erroneous. The credit goes to James Brown but that's not entirely true. Like The Beatles getting noticed in Hamburg, the Stones came on the scene in Milano. Mick met his inspiration and life long friend. He's asked Adriano Celentano to tour with him many times, but the Italian has a fear of flying.

I'm a huge Stones fan and at this point they're in uncharted territory. No band has gone this long with the original core and still makes influential and relevant music. I've seen them more times than I can count. Classic moment in November of '87 seeing Bo Diddley & Ron Wood together. I was lucky enough to shoot a game of pool once with 'Keef' but we talked more about futbol and Hitchcock. Epic night.

Bonafide Rock Royalty in a very elite, small circle consisting of probably only three or four other bands.

Enjoy this if you don't know it. I'm a huge fan of the song:

My favourites - Wild Horses and Gimme Shelter.

Best album - anything from BB through EoMS, including LIB and SF and depending on my mood.

But really, many of the British late 70's and 80's rockers were better lyricists and even better song writers and the Stones haven't really aged that well. I haven't ever bothered to go and see them.

No one can dispute the fact that the band has existed for a long time. However, the rolling stones haven't been relevant since about 1972/1973. To be extremely fair, they're not really about playing any real interesting music at all. They play their songs and one could argue they've always struggled at that. Mick Jagger's voice has that discernible grain and all, but he can only sing about 5 notes and he can only sing 3 of them in tune. So in reality, for the unconditioned music fan, the rolling stones are like an incorporated vegas show that plays with the archetypes of "rock and roll" and "blues" and all that, but shit, mick jagger is a venture capitalist, not a John Lennon or a Jerry Garcia
