Just be careful when looking to purchase one of these "hybrids".

I got my kids a goldendoodle, at their request. They wanted a small dog with the temperment of a retreiver (like our previous dog) but with a non-shedding coat.

As it turns out, the poodle half of the mix was actually a standard poodle. So, we got most of what we wanted, just about 3 times the size.

Suits me just fine but looks a little silly sitting on the kids' laps.

LOL! Goldendoodles are generally mothered/fathered by standard size poodles because of the size of a golden retriever stud or bitch. Think about it - a toy breed would be crushed if a stud golden retriever were pounding (lol..visuals:D ) a toy bitch! Imagine a toy poodle mounting a GR female? lol! Breeders will generally tell you what to expect to have when your pup grows up - and they should not have told you that you'd get the size of a toy poodle with the temperament of a golden. Research is always key when looking for the perfect hybrid. ^_^ And remember - nothing is guaranteed temperament wise! ^_^

Well, in my defense, lets just say there are certain times in your life when you're just not thinking straight... maybe I was thinking the dogs could spoon...

way out in left field
so these hybrids run on batteries as well as dog food?

I should think that the large/small breed mixes would be artificially inseminated but it would have to be the large breed female to carry the pups in case they grew to regular size. Can you imagine a Chihuahua having a litter of st bernards? OMFG......

I have a mini goldendoodle, so it is possible to breed with smaller poodles. A mini goldendoodle will be about 35 pounds. But they also have tiny goldendoodles. Anything is possible apparently...lol

Ya know, terb is the only forum where a posting about puppies would turn into a discussion of the actual....uhm....mechanics of the deal. Like really, a golden retriever on a yorkie???? Size queen!!

Arent these dogs just mutts with a really huge price tag thats put on by so called breeders to sucker people who have little or no knowledge of dogs?? dont get me wrong I love mutts and dogs in general, but taking two dogs that are very different in temperament, activity level etc and breeding them together is a recipe for a disaster. Case and point is that "bolgen"terrier, a boston terrier which is a companion dog mixed with a beagle a hunting dog, so what do you get? do you get the laid back nature of the Boston or the hey there is an interesting smell so I must track it down and you cant stop me attitude of the beagle??

at least with a single breed you know exactly for the most part what you are getting. A pug isnt going to be a great dog to go hiking or jogging with, but a lab needs a great deal of exercise etc etc.

Well, except for the exceptionally small breeds like chihuahuas, I think most puppies are the same size when they're born. It's only after 3 months or so when they start really growing to match their parents.

That image of the yorkie mother and golden retriever father still haunts me. What if the yorkie was unwilling????

"no way you're sticking THAT in me"

"But I wanna I wanna I wanna. C'mon it's just this once...pretty please????" <with big droopy golden retriever eyes>

Well, yes. I'm not sure I would say they are suckering people. They're making a product that they think people want. Basically they make a whole variety of mixed breeds that they think suit our lifestyles, promote the product and put a big price tag on it.

From a breeding perspective, I don't have enough knowledge to say whether this is a "recipe for disaster". I know lots of people with these new mixed breeds and haven't seen any with any problems that I know of.
