The Hurricanes did it. Why can't the Maple Losers?

Carolina Hurricanes (nee the sad sack Hartford Whalers) won the Stanley cup in their 27th year as a franchise.

How many more will they win before the Maple Laffs win their first in 40+ years.

It's really amazing what smart hockey people can do for a team. Raleigh is really a small market, more of a college BB town. But their fans are more fervent than any number of ACC sellouts. Says much about how MLSEL treats the local yokels.

Carolina had a bit of luck on their side also. Pushed to a game 7 by a Buffalo team whose D was ravaged by injuries and Edmonton losing their starting goalie in game 1

Up Here,ON
Because both teams had to miss the playoffs several years in a row and draft the great players such as Eric Staal & Andrew Ladd, both taken in the top 4. (Cam Ward was taken late in the first round)
Look at how upset people are now with the Leafs missing the playoffs once, imagine if they missed 3 or 4 years running. However that is what it takes. Go back to Tampa & Calgary, they both missed the playoffs many years in a row and had the chance to draft high. Wouldn't be tolerated in T.O.

Why did the Canes do it...about 10 really good reasons.

Why can't the leaf's? About 1000 bad reasons, opinions, players. owners. media crap, guaranteed TV coverage, teachers and on and on and on.

A franchise needs ONE owner who is willing to say..Get er' DONE!

Without that it's nothing more than an investment. So long as it's making money for the owners there is no reason for excellence. Ballard showed us that so many times. Good player..well we better trade him before it costs us money!!!

The rink has been full for 25 years straight. How can you lose on your investment?

Untill the Leafs have a unified ownership that WANTS a cup, it's the same old same old.

Based on the current ownership structure, that could well be a few years.

I'm a life long Leaf's watcher...not really a fan..but it's the team I've seen every Saturday night all my life!

I don't hold out much hope unfortunately. It's still a committee at MLSE and I don't think much will change.

Why? Cause if I was the owner of a full rink with huge TV revenues..I wouldn't worry about the cup either! What difference would the TV bonus be to me as opposed to Edmonton? As the Leaf's owner..I'm awash in cash! Why spend what you don't need to?

The Leaf's success in the future is'nt dictated by desire or marketing. It's all about revenue and return for the "investment group" that owns the team and all the other side shows that go with it.

But, we've been following a team that hasn't won since 1967..thank God I was alive to actualy see that on TV! I'm not hopeful I'll see another Leaf's Cup.

let's not forget the Oilers got to the finals with MacTavish coaching the same way Quinn does. They coach very similar offensive attack strategies and slightly different defensive zone coverage... The exception being the Leafs iced too many slow skaters this season. Something Quinn had little control over.

also, very Quinn-like: Even in game 7. all four lines were still rolling.

teams that get into playoffs earn substantially higher profits. Players are paid for regular season only; the teams' earning potential and margin rise dramatically with gate, concessions, broadcast, licensing, advertisement revenue, ......

Everyone is mentioning the fact that ACC is always full, MLSE dosen't have to spend to get a winning team etc... That may have been true before this year..there is a salary cap now people, there is only so much you can spend so before the leafs were "big" players in the league and didn't throw the right amount of money to the right personnel to win the cup. Now it's all about management, draft picks and some creativity on the part of GM's in the NHL. Doen't necessarily give me more confidence in the team but it should be like an NFL thing where different teams can come out of nowhere to win!!

The players should be getting more. It's not really fair when you really look at it.

Well, when I was young I used to do yard work for a multimillionaire and he used to say...

If you want to become rich and famous, don't stop doing what you do as a kid.

Of course, not knowing what the hell that meant then, now that it's 20 years later it's all starting to make sense.

Yes the laffs missed the playoffs.. Fans are dropping season tickets like hot lumps of shit ...(sic)

As if !! .. the Leafs will raise their ticket prices and still sell out , the reason the laffs haven't won a cup is that the fans do Tolerate it .. it will never happen , but if the building was half full for 1 season ,,, the leafs would be cup contenders the next year ..

The laffs are a great business .. they don't need to improve the product to sell it .. so why would they ?

and as mentioned .. with the salary cap the laffs are .. "forced" to save money .. how cool is that .. charge the fans more money to watch a product that costs half of what it did in 2004 .
