The fat gene debate

I was having a debate with a friend of mine who claims he has this
new "fat gene". He's quite a big boy, @ about 5'9", 350 lbs+++...
I'm roughly 5'9" @170
(6-7% body fat).

I carry a healthy lifestyle: excercise vigorously (20 hours per week),
I eat fast food (McDonald's) only about once per month or less; while
my buddy rarely exercises, and eats @ Licks every work day.

Now some researchers, claim that there is a gene that makes ppl
absorb more fat than others: story here. I think these guys are
just creating propaganda for newly released diet pills.

Even if the "fat gene" existed, ppl could not absorb more fat if they
consumed less fat... true? If ppl stayed away from Micky Dees, and
exercised atleast 5-10 hours per week, they'd be fit.

I wished they concentrate more on creating "pretty pills" for the "Ugly" gene. :D

I think specifically of this one beluga whale of a woman at work who actually has a handicapped parking sticker because she's fat -- which must be great for her because she's guaranteed a great parking spot when she goes and buys her lunch everyday at the fried chicken joint down the street.
lol, I love the metaphors you guys use... "Beluga whale". Too funny :p

I truly do believe that there is a "fat gene"... there are some people whose bodies just hold onto fat and these are the people who constantly struggle with their weight.
I am open to the possibility of a "fat gene", however I still think
ppl use it as an excuse to "give up" on themselves and over-eat.
If one knows he/she has this gene, why not cut the fat out of
their diet, so there's no fat to absorb in the first place!

A big chunk of me (pardon the pun :p) still thinks that this "fat gene"
is a media creation to sell new diet pills. Just like that research that
proved eating chocolate lowers your heart-rate (research funded
by Mars Bar).
