Ok I'm not from Toronto( Burlington) I've always wondered why it's called THE Danforth and not just Danforth.
The whole city used to be called the Muddy York, too. It was originally called "the muddy Danforth," as it wasn't paved, and some property of the local dirt made it into a muddy slog. Or maybe just to differentiate the Avenue from Danforth Road?
Not to mention any given speaker might well be referring to the neighbourhood around, just as much as the specific street itself.
That’s a very old debate. Officially now, it’s “The Beach”. Many of us who used to live out that way still call it “The Beaches”, and I believe there are three named beaches there. With respect Miss Croft, it is "The Beach".
Ethiopia is nowhere near the Middle East.Very soon it will be called "Little Middle East".
I knew someone would say it! lolWith respect Miss Croft, it is "The Beach".
I’m still resisting! It's funny that a lot of people think The Danny is a new name. My father called it The Danny since the 1960's.
