The cocking of guns in TV/movies

B

burt-oh-my!

This is just soooo silly yet so damn common in otherwise pretty good movies and TV shows.

Someone is pointing a gun at someone, so presumably the pointee is imminent danger of getting shot. But no, as we discover when something makes the shooter REALLY mad, so THEN he decides to cock the gun (or if it is a semi-auto - chamber a round) to show that , ghosh darn it, now you've done it, I'm going to show you that I MEAN it by actually cocking the gun. So prior to that, as, say, the gun-holder is walking through a maze of corridors, or searching room to room, he has decided that gee, he is hunting a dangerous criminal who could kill him at a moment's notice, but, well, I guess I'd still better not actually cock my gun.

Presumably if anyone made a dash for it, especially in the case of a bunch of guys all pointing their guns at one guy, all you would hear would be not the sounds of gunfire filling the air, but the 'click!' 'clack!' of wepons all being cocked first. GIMME A BREAK!

Its all fake, just for the drama. But ya ..I know what you mean, its painful to watch badly written movies and shitty acting just so they can sell us laundry soap or whatever.

Have you noticed some old cowboy movies where the shooter will hold the pistol with the arm pulled back, elbow almost behind him and the gun beside him near the armpit? Then when he shoots. he juts the gun forward or does a whipping action with the pistol as if to help the bullet leave the gun.

do you ever notice that guns in movies from the 50's to 80's all made the same sound or that guns in movies never run out of bullets. well they never run out until the last 10 mins of the movie and he checks and only has one bullet left and then he meets the bad guy.

And you never see the hero spend 20 min bombing up all his magazines. Apparently they come pre-loaded with ammo, and all guns use the same ammo too!

Another one I love is the character has a semi-automatic pistol and after firing a number of rounds (and of course at a dramatic point in the action) -CLICK out of amunition, but the slide hasn't locked back!

Yeah I agree with what you are saying. In the case of a 'handgun' the shooter would still be able to fire a shot, only the trigger pull
would be much stiffer. This is called 'double action' in a semi-automatic pistol. After the shooter 'cocks' the gun by either racking the slide
back, or manually cocking the trigger of a revolver, a round would now be in the chamber and the hammer would be cocked; this is called
'single action' and the trigger pull would be much lighter. Some older revolvers are 'single action only' and will not fire without first cocking the
trigger; on the other hand, almost all newer pistols will fire in either single or double action.
In the case of a pump action shotgun, racking the slide (the pump), to chamber a round is neccesary to fire the first shot. Shotguns do not
have the 'double action' capability that I just described, and are basically useless untill a round is chambered.
In reality, when loading a shotgun, its normal to load the first round directly into the chamber, and then fill the magazine. So, there is no need
to pump the slide for the first shot- a round is chambered and the hammer is already cocked.

As well I have never loaded either my pump 12 gauge or my semi-auto 12 gauge directly into the chamber. Always the mag first.
To each his own, but I've never understood those that do it that way. Seems like time wasted with extra steps, and more prone to a jam-up.
I havent owned a pump for years, strictly automatic and double-barrel hunting shotguns with internal hammers, and I always load into the chamber first. Drop a shell,
release the bolt, and thumb 2 into the mag. Obviously, with a dbl bbl, both shells go directly into the chamber...

There are semi-auto shotguns though...and a few full autos..

You know Brothers & Sisters, guns are awful, evil and way too much fun in film. This is still the one to beat:

At the 2:50 mark, you get a cinematic marvel of explosive cinema. It doesn't get much more fun than this!
