My Grandfather was a World War I vet. I was able to receive copies of his military records in a .pdf document through Colonel Beale of the 47th Highlanders.
Canadian soldiers were paid $2 per day for their first three months of action in Europe, and $1 per day for each additional month. This money was held in trust for them until their discharge from active service, or sent monthly to their family, if that was the soldier's preference. In addition, each soldier received ten cents daily for spending money, to buy things like gum, cigarettes or condoms, which were not part of the standard field issue.
