Imho I would give it to FX.
Their catalogue isn't large but it's loaded with quality, The Americans, Justified, Fargo and now Legion ranks up with anything other services are producing. I hope fucking Disney doesn't scuttle it.
HBO has had blockbusters like The Sopranos, Game of Thrones (although I don't think it will age well) and The Wire. But they've made some big mistakes, Hear and Now and Years and Years were both dreadfully boring, I lost interest in them after 3 episodes combined. And they made a major mistake by letting a major talent go.
Netflix has quantity but some of their offerings have hit with a thud. In their movies Beasts of No Nation was awesome but The Tall Girl stunk. Apart from the Letterman interviews and Narcos, there isn't anything that is a must watch.
And what is HBO's major mistake, they let Jemaine Clement go to FX. He's a talented writer/actor who developed Flight of the Conchord for them. I haven't watched that show but it has an 8.5 audience score. He was not in on the writing of Legion but had pivotal scenes in the show as Professor Oliver. While still at HBO he pitched a short film he made called What We Do In The Shadows: Interview with some Vampires - HBO passed. With the success of Legion, FX gave him the green light to start writing episodes, it's an intensely funny show. He's now been cast in James Cameron's Avatar sequels and as a co-writer as well.
Jamaine Clement is another major talent coming out of New Zealand. As Professor Oliver he stole many scenes in Legion. Is there anything in HBO that can match this?
