Since were almost at the midpoint of the decade it's a good time to review the best films so far. After careful consideration I've boiled it down to 5 entries. Gravity missed the top five by that much, but feel free to enter it or any other film that deserves to be in the top 5.

From 2010 onwards? To be honest, there haven't many exceptional movies. Mostly typical Hollywood crap. I didn't think gravity was that great. Great effects, but not much else.

I even didn't like inception too much.

I suppose it depends on what you want, and if you try to define things as "cinema", "film", "movie" etc.

I agree on American Hustle. As will the Fighter.

But my favorites? Sorry if its low brow but The Avengers and X-men, Days of Future Past were also excellent films. Captain America 2 as well.

It doesn't have to be "artsy" to be good.

Speaking of which, Guardians of the Galaxy was surprisingly watchable.

As for the weightier fare listed in the poll: meh. Not that any of them were really bad, just that they weren't all that outstanding either.

Oops! Forgot GOTG! It was quite good too!

What the casual fan isn't seeing yet is how all the movies are going to tie together. There are I believe doing the "Infinity Gauntlet" story. And its a good one!

Again. the "best ENGLISH LANGUAGE' films of the decade so far.

This is a very small category to choose from. There is so much more than one language genre of film making.

BYW, 'The Fighter' is just another 'Dysfunctional Family' pseudo opus that North Americans are so good at making since they relate to it so easily. It has no place on a list of anything.

I agree with Stinkynuts and Senor Draper.

I have a few that I enjoyed. Many entertaining movies (AH, WOWS, etc. etc.), but anything out of this world in this decade? I'd have to think about that.

I loved "The Town," produced and starring Ben Affleck. It is about a town in Boston that has produced more bank robberies than anywhere else in the states and the group of robbers. Fantastic chase scenes and very riveting. Extremely well written also.
I am not into Ben Affleck that much but I also liked "Argo," which coincidentally he had a star role in. Based on a true story with Hollywood hyberbole.

I didn't like the movie, "Gone Girl," although there was some very good acting in it.

Inception was very good although I don't rate it as one of the top movies.

Loved American Hustle. I think there have been some really good movies out this decade. A lot with special effects that are memorable.

I am always up for a good gangsta flick.

Agreed, Argo is Hollywood propaganda of the shittiest kind.

I recently watched 50/50 again, and I found it extraordinary. Granted no one wants to watch a film about cancer. But it's handled with so much empathy and compassion, it's hard to ignore. All the actors supported Joseph Gordon Levitt to the max in his most difficult role. Will Reiser wrote the script with Seth Rogen adding the comedy. We've all had to deal with the dreaded scourge at some point in our lives, it's an act of b**********y to bring it to film. It will leave you laughing and at the point of tears at the same time.

My picks change depending the mood I'm in. A few I really liked not mentioned: Life of Pi, Lincoln, Kick-Ass (I found Kick-Ass refreshingly original), 12 Years a Slave, The Lincoln Lawyer, The Kings Speech

OK, I'll take a few bites:

-Looper: I think my personal favourite
-12 Years A Slave: fully deserved Best Picture
-Her: surprisingly enjoyable. I actually avoided watching it at first
-The Ides of March: R.I.P P.S.H.
-Shame: I guess I like Steve McQueen as a director
-Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: for when you feel like a great slow, "boring" movie
-The Social Network: Fun Fincher
- 50/50: Disclaimer: a good friend of mine has a brain tumour
-Honourable mention for enjoyable (but not necessarily the best) foreign flicks: I Saw The Devil and The Raid: Redemption
-Honourable mention for comedies: Bridesmaids, Crazy Stupid Love, Goon
-No horror movies really worth mentioning (bummer)

That said, I think the previous 5 year period from 2005 to 2009 had significantly better films.

Then I need to see 50/50.

BTW, I've heard from one discriminating person, that he thought Argo was good and entertaining. Isn't there some credit due to Canada given in the film? I mean, Affleck had to make it interesting for a larger American audience, no? So what if he took some dramatic license? JFK was a great movie, despite dramatic license by Oliver Stone (although I don't think he was too far off in his version of events and got the basics right).
