have any of you done it ? i am thinking about going up and checking it out to see what it looks like. 2 1/2 hours minimum between the boat there and back and the walking which is fine and 28$ for a ticket.

anyway just wondering if anyone here has actually done the tour and if it is worth it ?

I went many years ago, like mid 80's and recollect it being worthwhile part of the SF visit. I understand there was some fire damage done by occupying militant First Nations people at some point. Not sure how bad the damage was to the structure.

It is awesome. I did it two years ago and loved it. Hard to get a ticket. The self directed tour is narrated with headsets.

Yes, years ago. My friend took a pic of me trying to scale the fence lol!

It was a great tour, and the tour guide was cute too.

Did it. Kind of worth it. What surprised me most was how tantalizingly close the city was. Must have been achingly frustrating to spend years there and be so close to the action. See cars and street cars and almost smell the city. You can almost reach out and touch it.

I've been to San Francisco a number of times but never did the tour until earlier this summer. Should have done it before as the tour was definitely worth it if you're interested in history. Allow yourself a few hours to spend on the island as they have a self-guided tour that is really interesting and takes awhile if you listen to the entire thing - it has a number of past guards and prisoners narrating parts of the tour and describing what life was like "in the day".

See no point to going to SF and not doing the tour. Have been on it twice over the past decade.

The voice of the recorded tour guide is worth it alone, and overall it is a well designed tour and experience.
