If this doesn't result in some form of criminal charge, then what does that say about our legal system? No wonder people say screw it and just take the money. Nothing ever seems to happen to these crooks!

Someone told me that the cash deposit is like a retainer which isn't recognized as income until it is applied against services rendered/billed.

That could explain why there was a delay in claiming it on his tax return.
Yes, that is a legal loophole that Mulroney is using. It hardly explains why he accepted $225,000 in cash with no apparent work done to earn it. I've got to hand it to that lawyer who is cross examining Mulroney. I don't know how he keeps a straight face when Mulroney comes up with such silly answers to his questions.

And he's just trying that.

Getting bits and pieces from the media don't do justice. For those who haven't, try to watch the whole thing on the tube or cbc.ca. Muldoone's performance is ... simply amazing.

A bribe by any other name is still a bribe. If there is any justice in this country, that lying scumbag will spend a very long time in jail. Thay can throw Cretien in there with him for good measure for the sponsorship scandal. I wonder, if Lying Brian gets convicted, will he have to pay the money back he was awarded from the first time they went after him?

In the end nothing significant is going to happen to Mulroney...He'll get a slap on the wrist and everyone will move on...

Lawyers/politicians look out for each other...that's why I can't stand lawyer & politicians.

Justice is not blind.

amazing that people are complaining about the costs of the Tamil protests, while we are wasting 14 million on these hearings when we know the outcome will be NOTHING.

The problem is in proving he got the money for some reason other than what he is saying. If it was a retainer for future lobbying work then there was probably nothing illegal. If. And proving it had something to do with the Airbus contract has already been tried...and failed.

You are so right ! Remember the $20 million inquiry for Tom Jacobek. Taxpayers lost and nothing at all happened to him.

If the $225K was not income until applied to services rendered then why did he file $37,500 a year for six years when he finally declared the the income. He should only have filed $225K for one year.

Not quite true. He went away. I wouldn't discount that outcome.

Absolutely 100% true.

This is a collosal waste of money and time. The prick took the money, it was a bribe, everyone knows it was a bribe, however, at the end of the day, this spectacle is going to cost the tax payers of Canada millions in Lawyer's fees and NOTHING is going to come of it. Nothing.

Same goes with the sponsorship scandal. The cons made such a HUGE deal of it when they were in opposition, they tarred and feathered Paul Martin who had nothing to do with it, who got in front of it and once they were in power, the entire issue was quietly dropped.
