(CNNGo) -- Thai Airways International is imposing weight restrictions on its 6,000 flight attendants. Those who don't shape up face the risk of being kept out of the sky.

Also female Thai Airways flight attendants over the age of 45 were earlier this year given the option of early retirement through a buyout package instituted as part of the airline's drive to rejuvenate its image and save costs.

According to a story in the Bangkok Post, flight attendants under 45 who don't meet the airline's body mass index and waistline controls, imposed last year, have been limited to service on domestic and same-day-return flights.

If they don't comply after a year, they will be transferred to ground services.

The 41 flight attendants affected recently complained to the Labour Protection and Welfare Department that the regulation violated their human rights and decreased their incomes. They were told the regulation is not illegal and falls within the authority of management, which was concerned about customer service.

ROFLMAO, this unspoken, open "secret" among the Asia-based airlines for several decades now "comes out of the closet" and become mandatory.

Perhaps this is necessary since many Asian ladies born after 1980s share the same penchant to junk food like their Caucasian counterparts and thus unlike their moms, find it a challenge to stay fit!!

BTW, ain't that great when the power of those flight attendants unions not as strong as those in the West? One could tell the power of the flight attendants union by looking at the average age of their female members, usually starting mid-40s.

Too late given the entrenched power of the Union. No point to spend precious cash on lawyers, instead of jet fuels.

LOL, that would depend on the flight and the skin color of the flight attendant in question. ;)

Women flight attendants on Air Canada?? Really?? My flights always seem to have "girls" (cough cough) working the aisles. Girls with adams apples, that is. Flamers rule the skies in this country!!!

I don't get the point of these efforts. If you can't fuck them or join the mile high club, this is just plain job discrimination, notwithstanding it being "part of the airline's drive to rejuvenate its image and save costs." Now if they were really cost conscious, they would allow flight attendants the option of escorting (duty free) and splitting the revenue 50/50 with the airline to offset costs. Now why didn't Virgin Airlines think of this novel idea? I never believed it lived up to its name (or full potential). lol
