Denmark Shuts 'Animal Brothels' With Bestiality Ban
Law passed with a narrow 91-75 vote yesterday
Up until recently it was legal, in certain circumstances, to have sex with an animal in Denmark, but the country passed a law officially prohibiting bestiality with a 91-75 vote yesterday, Mashable reports. Sex with an animal had previously been allowed as long as the animal wasn't harmed, which was hard to prove. Officials moved to pass the bill amid "frequent reports of the occurrence of organized animal sex shows, clubs, and animal brothels," according to the Danish Ethical Council for Animals.
The law will take effect July 1, meaning anyone caught having sex with an animal after that date could face up to a year in prison; repeat offenders could face two years, the BBC reports. The move leaves Hungary, Finland, and Romania as the only EU countries where bestiality is not banned. (
