Terb search question

This was a bit un-nerving to notice, but I'm sure there is a techinical (computer lingo) explanation. What does "search the child forum" mean when I do an 'advanced search?'

I noticed it is automatically checked (for the first time, don't know how long it's been there) recently when I did a search.

Sub forum... The forum with in a forum... Lounge is a child forum under General Area.

When you type in something to search, WHY doesn't it just search instead of sending you somewhere else to type in what you want to search for. Old way was better and easier.
