Does anyone have any experience using the telegram app? I’ve noticed it pop up in a few conversations and a few people on X have asked for me to reach them on telegram. Feels like scams, but I have no experience with this platform.

My opinion is that if an ad has Telegram, Signal, WhatsApp, etc for contact choices, it is most likely a scam - and they probably aren't even on this continent...

Use your best judgment and always research the provider.
Using a specific app isn’t always a sign someone is a scam.
I use WhatsApp to communicate with clients as it’s easier to arrange video calls if they don’t have an iPhone/facetime.
But I also have a solid reputation and lots of ways to verify who I am.
I believe telegram is used often by Asian providers and agencies. But also providers from other countries. Using an app doesn’t mean you’re going to get scammed, just make sure you can verify the person on the other end before making any arrangements with them.

Yep - a number of the Asian agencies in and around Toronto have Telegram accounts. They use them to post schedules, answer questions so everyone following can see the answers, push out photos and videos, etc. Nothing sketchy in those cases.

It's the ads with the same word-salad, same use of emojis, same services offered (including unsafe ones) that just scream "I'm a fake/scam ad!" with Signal (actually, an incredible platform), Telegram (Russian-owned), and WhatsApp as contact methods.

I’ve recently signed up on Telegram because one of my work contacts overseas only communicate with it. Imagine my surprise to discover 3 ex-SPs I used to see automatically listed in my contacts page with their real names!
I am very skeptical about this. So the 3 ex SWs gave you their real world phone numbers ? Maybe it was rookies mistakes . It is possible to change the devices on telegram to not show your your real world information. Unless they are using their world informations for their jobs on telegram.

I have no clue how Telegram works but their names are there. 🤷
