More than 150 parents and students were left outside school gates this morning amid an escalating protest over a ‘sexist’ uniform policy. A huge crowd demonstrated with banners outside Lewes Priory, in East Sussex, demanding the school reverses its gender neutral policy banning girls from wearing skirts. Sussex Police were brought in to help control the planned protests and officers were seen standing guard at the entrance checking uniforms. But many students found they couldn’t attend classes on their first day of term, after teachers closed the main gates when the crowd gathered outside. The demonstration comes after the school announced in 2017 that all students were required to wear trousers, after ‘concerns’ were raised over the length of skirts and to accommodate transgender pupils. When the new rule was introduced, only new students were required to wear the new uniform.

I cannot see how setting a dress-code for just one sex could ever be thought of — never mind presented — as gender-neutral. Now if they'd banned boys and girls both, from wearing skirts, I'm sure all would have been fine.

Transgender people make up less the 0.1% of the population of the world. Women are around 50%. Why are we making laws that inconvenience 50% of people to make 0.1% feel better about themselves? Like, we need to respect everyone, not be dicks to each other, but every tiny little niche group don’t need their own laws. That’s simply not logistically viable.

In this sane vein (And don’t get me wrong, I have some transgendered friends, this isn’t about that) I’m excited to see the fourth wave of feminism eat itself and all the other grievance studies from the left. It’s all about who can oppress the most groups while screaming about being a victim.

The days of the myth of the big scary white male patriarchy being the bane of the world is finally being left behind as these groups attacking each other.

I know it is going to be a terrific fight once the feminists attacked Margaret Atwood.

I’ll grab the popcorn.

I'm lost. I thought a gender-neutral uniform is what they all wanted? Schools can't win no matter what they do.

There's one way to fuck these sanctimonious teachers over, if girls aren't allowed to wear skirts - boys should wear kilts. They may feel a draft but it's a small price to pay for looking chivalrous to the girls.

As Scottie would say, "up me kilt teacher".

I think the issue they were trying to resolve had to do with girls being provocative, intentionally distracting, and in some cases just inappropriate. They hiked their skirts, didn't wearing bras, and just flaunted themselves in a controlling/power seeking way.

The boys loved it!!

How is it gender-neutral to insist girls dress like boys? Gender-neutral would require both genders to dress as the other. Or everyone to wear burnooses

There would be no gender favoritism in specifying both genders can wear trousers with specified cuffs and crease, length, colour and fabric, or similarly kilts, worn to clear the floor by two fingers when kneeling,(which I believe is the traditional specification). But as Dcoat noted, it was never about gender-neutral, just the usual prudery of adults confronted by girls experimenting with their new attractiveness as women.

Who can say what it is to "dress like boys"? Are you saying the male gender "owns" trousers? That's not very progressive of you.

Who's to say they don't? Or that the female gender 'owns' skirts? If the one can be gender-neutral, so can the other.

This case is clearly a Same Old Anti-Sex Story: Uptight authorities clamping down on girls showing more leg than they like. It's the regressive media and TERBites who like to cut'n'paste them here, who want to make that into a thing about PC-ness and gender-neutral.

BTW similar hypocritical stupidity is going on in Quebec, where their new anti-Muslim law, like the Brits' old dress-code, sees the same garment as differently 'offensive', on old and new wearers.

To paraphrase a President, "It all depends what you mean by new, when writing stupid new laws".
