Teachers - what a bunch of whiners. The union should pay all the parents who took a day off work and/or paid for daycare or a sitter.

All it would take is a few months of work to rule and the laws will be changed again.
That's what happened when Harris tried pretty much the same thing years ago.

Teachers were at work today. The OLRB's decision came at 4 am. If they knew about having to go to work.... parents could have taken their kids too. They didn't have to stay home.

Whether you like teachers or not or what you think of their pay..... what strikes me (no pun intended) is that the deck is stacked in teh gov's favour. They can pass a bill to force a contract then repeal the bill and then bar the people from striking. In other words you can't negotiate with the government if they don't want to be at the table and you can't strike.

I don't think they could get away with firing 150K people in ON but at this rate I wouldn't be surprised if the next step is to dismantle the union such that current teachers will get the current contract and new teachers will get a far worse one. Much like what is happening in th auto industry.

For all intents and purposes if a union can't negotiate and can't strike it's pretty much useless.

Are you saying there are 150,000 teachers? That is a medium size army. I think Israel has won wars with no more than 150,000 uniforms.

Actually, it would be a return to sanity.

Civil servants stand together

I have a big problem the supposedly impartial Labour Board "delaying" the decision until 4:am.

Total bull shit, either they could or they couldn't, nothing changed during the time they were "discussing" the issue.

Its obvious that they were siding with the unions,...with the end result that families were still inconvenienced by the teachers unions.

Is that your great contribution to society?
When you do not get what you want, use extortion ?

My teacher friend went to work today and it was a result of the radio that they knew to go to work and not report to the picket line. Parent's could have done the same thing.

In ON that's about the number I gleaned from a Broten press conference.

What, you don't think its within their rights to do just the job as required?
No extra-curricular activities, all by the book?
Isn't that the way a true free market works, you do just the job you are paid for?
Wouldn't that make you happy?

Then, in your free market world, parents could decide if they wanted to pay for extras, like Rob Ford's football team.
Sports and clubs for the rich.
Isn't that the way you think it should work?

Still don't understand why we "need" a massive army of 150,000 teachers who work only 4-5 hours a day and get the Summer off. How much all in cost is this army costing us?

If you do that in the free market,...you don't get very far,...less raise's etc., etc.

But in the unionized civil servant world,...it just doesn't matter,...you get a raise anyway.

Could that have something to do with the over 2 million students in those schools?

According to the government website there are 115,000 teachers. That's on average 18 kids per teacher which seems pretty reasonable considering that includes kindergarten, special ed classes, and special programs.

setting aside our opinions of teachers and unions, how do you conclude that the OLRB sided with the union? Who pays the OLRB salaries? Who did you expect them to side with, given the fact that the government pays their salaries? If you didn't understand it, I was asking questions with obvious answers.

If YOU don't understand,...Simply,...they had no choice but order them back to work,...but did aid fellow none elected civil servants, by doing exactly what I said they did.

The government pays the school boards salaries also,...but have they made any effort to control payouts to teachers over the last ten years,...which is what has gotten us into this mess with the teachers in the 1st place !!!

The teachers biggest issue is the government taking away their constitutional right to collectively bargain. All other issues aside, we're talking about a very slippery slope. The erosion of our constitutional rights and freedoms in Canada over the past decade by both Federal and Provincial Governments causes me very serious concern.

It's one thing to declare a group an essential service and take away their right to strike. I can understand that. To deny someone their constitutional rights to me isn't representative of a free democratic society
